The Turbine Institute of the Litostxo~ Combine, which is headed by $'n~-
neere Vuckovic and Marinek, is one oi' the largest and rLaet important research
c.ev~;=re in ~ugcslsvla. L~nportant problems conePZ?aing the construction of
t:~roinee9 turbeeuction equipment, ventllators, turbocompressors, and aircraft

3epartment there is a model hydraulic turbine through which 100 liters of water
pa=t per second, while 159000 liters pass per second through a tuubine of a
hydr?~el~ctric power plant. The first domestic Kaplan turbine was constructed
at ?he institute. When perfected, it was able to exploit 10 percent of tae
pctenrisl power cf water. The iustitute~is also experimenting TPith propelled
surtior. pumps for drsi:naQe and irrigation, some of which Litoetrn~ is produc-
ing ?aerially. These pumps lift 200 liters of crater h to '; meters per second.
They wLll be used for reclamation tasks and for irrigstia3 rice fields,

tion. 'Phe institute will be divided into two departments, one for experimenta-
tion in hydraulics and the other in aerodynamics. The first will be equipped
r,:tth ho~;~ reservoirs containing over 1,000 cubic meters of water, two industrial
cranes9 anal testing stations ?or Pelton, Kaplan, and Freacic turbines. The
second department will consist of an aerodynamic testing hall equipped with
ventllators, an aerodynamic tunnel projecting streams of air on the model tnr-
biues, and equipment Por turbocompresaors.
In prewar Yugoslavia there was only one dielectric porcelain Factory, in
Novi Sad, pred~.tcing only 200 'tors of dielectric porcelain a year for low-voltage
power lines. At present it is planned that the dielectric rorcelain industry
will pr~auc? s variety of insulators for tensions of 35,000 volts up to 110,000
volt::.
