GABRIEL PETER AGAINST TITO -- New York Riportok Es Hirek Magyarorszagrol,
29 Jul 50
In an article for the Budapest daily, Szabad Nep, Gabriel Peter, chief of
the Hungarian political police, sharply attacked the UDB, Tito's political
police. He denounced the terroristic bandits of the UDB, among others, Petar
Zhakich, accusing them of obtaining confessions by use of electric current,
torturing families of political prisoners, etc.
In the fall of 1947, Peter paid a visit to Yugoslavia as head of a dele-
gation of the Hungarian political police and signed an agreement with Petar
Zhakich for the cooperation of the political police forces of the two countries.
After his return to Budapest in November 1947, Peter published the following
statement in Magyar Rendor, the official gazette of the Hungarian state police.
In Yugoslavia there is no unemployment, corruption, or speculation. One
is struck by the large number of youth, as if everyone were young in Yugoslavia.
The people are enthusiastic, as well as modesty well-balanced, and self-respecting.
The Yugoslav comrades are open-hearted and generous and are in solidarity with
us,. They were largely responsible for the fact that the bonds of friendship be-
tween us have been tightened. Tito knows what he wants -- he wants the right
thing. We would serve our country best by endeavoring to imitate Yugoslavia."

most of them are still there. The surviving Hungarian prisoners of war still
wear the rugged remnants of the uniforms in which they were captured in 1945?
