The chief source of the tungsten shipments which are sent to the German Democrati,,e
Republic for processing is China; these shipments are routed via Czechoslovakia, and are_
delivered to the Bitterfeld Electrical-Chemical Combine. This plant also receives tungsl1c
acid for subsequent treatment, that is, production of powdered tungsten, which is formed
into pressed pieces. Most of the tungsten received by the Bitterfeld Combine is supplied
to the GDR's processing and consumer firms in the form of ferrotungsten. At the present
time, the biggest consumer is the VEB(People-Owned Enterprise) Werder,a. H. /Havel Rive,
Electro-Volt-Contact Construction, which produces tungsten electrodes and other products
for the electrical industry.
Between 1 November and 15 December 1951 the VEB Electro-Volt delivered to GDR con-
sumersij 113,250 tungsten electrodes, with a total weight of 2,360 kilograms, as well as
other tungsten products, namely contacts, t very small screws and rivets, etc.,
with a total weight of 287 kilograms. However, these products are not made of pure
tungsten, but are all high-grade alloys.
At present, the VEB Electro-Volt employs 108 persons. The technical management is
responsible to the Metallurgical Department of the Hennigsdorf Steel and Rolling Mill,
which assigns, on a rotating basis, one of the engineers of Dr. Kuentscher's staff to
the VEB Electro-Volt. Guentschel, the welding expert from the welding-training department
at Hennigsdorf, is a permanent member of the technical management. 50X1-HUM
