Mr. Thomas W. Ainsworth
Director, Office of Mandatory Review
Bureau of Administration
Department of State
Room 1239, New State Building

Dear Mr. Ainsworth:
Enclosed are those chapters from Ambassador Nathaniel Davis' manuscript
on the period of his ambassadorship to Chile, which you sent us in different
installments between 18 November 1983 and 28 February 1984.
As of my staff mentioned in his meeting with you and Mr. Davis
this week, the Agency normally asks that all mention of a CIA presence in a
specific foreign location be omitted from any manuscript we review. This is,
of course, a protection for Foreign Service officers as much as it is for Agency
personnel and activities. However, in the particular case of Chile during the
Allende regime, a great deal of information has been put in the public domain by
the U.S. Senate, as well as in memoirs previously passed by the Agency. In this
situation, and especially since Ambassador Davis has sourced so much of his
information, we will make no suggestions for deletions in the manuscript to
protect CIA equities.
We have appreciated the opportunity to review the manuscript prior to its
publication, and to speak with Ambassador Davis on this matter.
Sincerely,
Director of Information Services
Directorate of Administration
