D. C.20505 16 December 1985 Dear John, I have your request for information about photo reconnaissance satellites and how they work. We can't give you information on that except to point out that a considerable amount of information has unfortunately appeared in the public media. The best thing I can do for you is to refer you to two books published by Ballinger Publishing Company, 54 Church Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138. One is Sword and Shield which has a chapter on technical collection, including.imagery and ocean and space surveillance. The other, I believe by the same publisher, is about the American intelligence system and has virtually all the information that has been published, some of it accurate and some of it inaccurate, about alleged photo reconnaissance activities which, despite all the publicity, is still classified. The author of the two books is Jeffrey Richelson. He used to work in Defense intelligence I believe and now teaches at American University here in Washington. The book about the Soviet system just came out and the other one on the US Intelligence Community was published in 1985. Yours, William J. Box 5559 Santa Fe, NM 87502 November 21, 1985 National Photographic Interpretation Center Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Gentlemen: Last week at the National War College (where I was lecturing) of N.S.A. suggested that I write you for assistance. In connection with some writing I am doing I need to educate myself about photo reconnaissance satellites, both American and Russian. / need to understand something of how they work, how their photographs are transmitted or transported to earth and how interpreters use them. I am sure much information is classified and I am not asking for that. I seek information that is in the public domain, in print, and I would like to interview someone who can explain the material that is properly available. Can you suggest unclassified sources for some or all of this information? 2 DEC 1985 CC: I'll very much appreciate your help. Yours truly, John Ehrlichman sdiir.
