DATE OF DATE DIST. T& Jun 1953 SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. NEW PLANTS GROWN EXPERIMENTALLY -- Bucharest, Romania Libera, 17 Jan 53 The ICAR (Institut de Cercetari Agronomice Romane, Rumanian Institute for Agronomic Research) in Bucharest, aided by the Ministry of Agriculture, for several years studied the possibility of growing new fiber and oleaginous plants that could be adapted to Rumania's climatic conditions. RESEARCH IN AGRICULTURE AND EDUCATIONAL COURSES FOR PEASANTS IN RUMANIA STATE ARMY During 1952 the ICAR experimental station cultivated abutilon, which ft grown in dry regions and gives fibers of the same quality as hemp. The cultiva- tion of this plant will be extended to 100 hectares in 1953, including 60 hec- tares at agricultural schools and 40 hectares at state farms. Yucca is being grown experimentally, and with good results, to replace Manila rope. A characteristic of this plant is the great resistance of its fi- ber and the large yield per hectare. It was planted on 15 hectares in 1951 and this area will be doubled in 1953. In addition, it is still planted in hot- houses. A special harvesting machine was built, with the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture, for use on the 1953 harvest since this plant requires cutting rather than reaping. Kenaf and raimee (Chinese grass) are also being grown experimentally. These fiber plants are especially important to the Rumanian economy, as are cylindrical luffa, various species of cotton and oleaginous plants, such as sesame, lalleman- tia, and bush hazelnuts, and fodder plants, such as ciumitza (foxtail millet) which yields large quantities of seed. It further recommended the immediate publication of the periodical Hidrosmelioratia (Water I-^provemeat), which will inform Rumanian specialists of the success obtained by Soviet science. The resolution also calls for the cre- ation of the Institute for Improvement Research.
