Sophia Casey, widow of former CIA
director William Casey, called The
Post's Bob Woodward "a jerk".
Casey on press
Sophia Casey, widow of CIA di-
rector William Casey, appeared on
national television this past week-
end to blast one member of the
press in particular, Washington
Post reporter Bob Woodward. It
was Mr. Woodward who claimed
last year that he conducted an ex-
clusive deathbed interview with
Mr. Casey in which the CIA chief
said he knew of the diversion of
U.S. funds to the Nicaraguan resis-
tance forces, otherwise known as
the Iran-Contra affair. %Irs. Casey,
in an interview last September with
CBS, charged that the Woodward
interview with her husband never
took place, and labeled the journal-
ist's claim an "outright lie ... an in-
vented story."
Mr. Woodward appeared on
CNN's Larry King Live one night
last week and for the umpteenth
time defended his alleged exclu-
sive. One reason was to promote his
book, "VEIL: The Secret Wars if
the CIA, 1981-1987," which is now
being published in paperback. Mrs.
Casey caught wind of the show and
requested equal air time, which Mr.
King gladly provided Friday night.
This time she summed up her
feelings for Mr. Woodward with
these words - "a jerk."
