Soil analyses were made, and specialists on 9 January 1953 submitted reports on the results to the plenary session of the Bucharest People's Council. Representa- tives of raion committees of Bucharest Regiune, as well as leaders of col- lectives and TOZ, specialists in vegetable growing, scientists, and represen- tatives of the working masses attended the meeting. Vegetable zones will be developed in 1953 and 1954 over an area of 22,300 hectares, of-which 19,700 Hectares will be irrigated and planted with vegetables. Early potatoes will be planted over an area of 6,800 hectares, without irrigation.- Production zones for vegetables, leguminous plants, and early potatoes in Bucharest Regiune include farms and agricultural units of ell types in Bucharest municipal raions, as well as in Vidra, Mihailesti, Racari, Spagov, and Crevedia raions. Propaganda work will also be carried on to convince peasants to join collectives and TOZ to specialize in vegetable growing. The vegetable production plan by hectares is established as follows. state farms will cultivate 7,346 hectares; other farms set up by enterprises and institutions will cultivate 1,237 hectares; the Bucharest Animal and Vegetable Enterprise will cultivate 297 hectares; collectives, 608 hectares; TOZ, 1,049 hectares; and individual small farmers, 9,138 hectares. A permanent and systematic control will be set up by the executive committee of the people's council to supervise labor distribution and compliance with all rules of the plan. Collectives in villages surrounding Bucharest City have started to put into effect the decision for the creation of vegetable zones. At the Popesti- Leordeni State Farm, for instance, preparations in the vegetable sector are in full swing. The vegetable growing plan for 1953 was increased 45 percent over 1952. Vegetable gardens will be irrigated 100 percent in 1953, as against only 30 percent in 1952. Irrigation installation work has been started in Glina and Gradini. More than 60,000 cubic meters of soil have been removed; water distribution basins and main and secondary canals have been cut; con- struction of three pumping stations has been started. Furthermore, 38,000 tons of natural fertilizer have been spread on the fields. More than 15,000 square meters of land have been prepared for seedlings; this represents 70-percent of the plan. Local collectivists pledged to construct with materials from their local resources 600 square meters of hothouses and to set up 5,000 square meters of seedling plots. The collectivists have already planted 3,000 square meters of lettuce, parsley, and spinach, using new varieties which resist cold weather. The management of the state farm provided the necessary seed and distributed it to the various sectors. Most of the machines and implements are already repaired and ready for use. Repair work on 12 irrigation pumps has almost been completed. Soviet irrigation methods will be applied. Granulated superphosphate will be used as fertilizer. Agriculturist Garabet Vaschet is studying the use of a ma- chine for mechanical replanting of tomato seedlings. Gardeners Ion Marcov, Ion Pitigoi, Maria Radu, and Silvia Blindia, tractor operator Aftenie Roman, and mechanic Mircea Cobzaru were specially active in competition work. CONSTRUCT IRRIGATION CANAL -- Bucharest, Romania Libera, 9 Jan 53 The Pitesti Regiune People's Council is particularly interested in de- veloping vegetable planting. A work plan has already been put into opera- tion. Each raion will distribute the gardening lots, implements, and the necessary seed. Collectives in Valea-Mare-Podgoria, Stefanesti, Ulesti, Jugureni, and Calinesti will increase the areas planted with vegetables. Construction of a 2-kilometer irrigation canal from the Arges River to the Rastoaca and Potop rivers in Gaesti Raion is to be completed by 1 March 1953. An area of 800 hectares will be irrigated by this canal. It is planned to ex- tend the irrigation canal from the rice fields of the Ratesti Commune state collective to Petroaia, in order to irrigate an additional 400 hectares, INCREASE OF VEGETABLE ZONE AROUND TURNU-SEVERN -.
