PLAN SHARP RISE IN USSR TV RADIO OUTPUT; DEFECTIVE PICTURE TUBES BUILD MORE, BETTER TV SETS -- Moscow, Moskovskiy Komsomolets, 21 Nov 53 In 1954, the USSR plans to produce 325,000 television sets; in 1955, 760,000 sets; and in 1956, one million sets. Present sets have 9 x 12 centimeter and 13 x 18 centimeter screens. In 1954, stores of Glavelektrosbyt (Main Administration for the Sale of Electrical Output) will put on sale the Avangard, Sever, and other new models which have 18 x 24 centimeter screens. NEW MODELS OF TELEVISION SETS -- Moscow, Komsomol'skaya Pravda, 21 Oct 53 9? Plants of the Ministry of Electric Power Stations and Electrical Industry will soon be producing the Avangard, Pioner, and two models of the Sever tele- vision sets. The Avangard is half the size of the Leningrad T-2 set, iS ' lighter than the T-2, and has a larger screen. The new sets are easier to ad- just and are equipped with picture tubes that are not subject to ion burns. In 1954, Glavelektrosbyt plans to make thousands of VE-1 rubber-blade fans available to consumers. The top of the set is raised when it isdn operation, thus providing better ventilation for the set. The controls and loud-speaker are inside the set. The 16-tube set is comparatively easy to assemble and simple to operate. The screen of the low-cost Pioner set is only slightly larger than the KVN-49 screen. The Pioner weighs half as much as the KVN-49 and is smaller in over-all size. The Pioner has nine tubes and an electrostatic-deflection picture tube. Like the Avangard, the Pioner has the loud-speaker inside, and the lid of the set must be raised to operate it. The new goals set forth by decrees of the Council of Ministers USSR and the Central Committee of the CPSU call for an increase in radio and television receiver production of 4.4 times in 1955 and 5.3 times in 1956 (the output at the beginning of the plan period]. Planned output for 1956 is 4,400,000 radio sets, and one million tele- vision sets. K. L..Kurakin and G. P. Kazanskiy, deputy ministers of Electric Power Stations and Electrical Industry USSR, who direct the radio industry, must take the proper steps -to increase the output of radio parts and improve the distribution of radio products. MINSK PLANT TO PRODUCE TV SETS -- Minsk, Sovetskaya Belorussiya, 4 Oct 53 In 1953, the Minsk Radio Plant organized the output of a number of new types of products. In 1954, the plant will start producing television sets. SELL MORE TELEVISION?SETS -- Leningradskaya Pravda, 18 Oct 53 So far in 1953, Leningrad stores of Glavelektrosbyt have sold 14,500 KVN-49 and T-2 television sets, 3,500 more than in all of 1952. COMPLAIN OF DEFECTIVE PICTURE TUBES -- Moscow, Moskovskaya Pravda, 17 Nov 53 A reader of Moskovskaya Pravda complained that the picture tube of his KVN-49 television set went out of order 10 days after he purchased .' the. set. In a period of 5 months, the picture tube has been replacedsix'times.' These defective tubes are made by the Zaprudnya Glass Plant. B. Lyubetskiy, director of the Zaprudnya Glass. Plant states that defects in the tubes can be attributed to faulty design and to low-quality materials used in production. Over a long period of time. the.,Zaprudnya Glass Plant has received low- grade platinite, which reduced brightness and caused the picture tubes to break down rapidly.
