DCI/DDCI Assigned Tasks
SOVA and NESA prepared talking points
activity and for the DDCI's meeting with
Deputy Secretary of Defense Taft.
NESA prepared talking points for the DDCI and the DDI on
monitoring the status of border tensions between Libya and Egypt,
and on Pakistani domestic and foreign policy issues for the DCI's
meeting with Ambassador Hinton.
Policy Support
OEA provided off-the-shelf items on the Korean military
balance fir Vice President Bush
OEA briefed US Ambassador-designate to Wellington, Paul
Cleveland, on developments in New Zealand and the South Pacific.
EURA provided Secretary Shultz short briefing papers on the
political and economic situation in West Berlin, Hungary
Romania, and Yugoslavia, and EURA

SOVA prepared five short briefing papers for Department of
Commerce representatives attending the US-USSR Trade and Economic
Council meetings.
OCR and SOVA talked with Mark Parris, Director of EUR/SOV,
Department of State, to get an impression of General Secretary
Gorbachev and other Soviet Summit attendees. Mr. Parris attended
the Summit as part of the US delegation,
OSWR met with the Defense Department's Director of Space and
Defense Policy, Dr. Kent Stansbury, to discuss the President's
"Open Labs Policy," which will be part of the upcoming round of
DST talks in Geneva.
OSWR briefed the Director of the Defense Security Assistance
Agency and his staff on special materials and technology
transfer.
ACIS has started an effort to write three sets of papers in
the next three weeks to better prepare our NST intelligence
representatives to deal with any verification topics that might
come up during Round IV.
A special NESA Review issue on the Persian Gulf in 1986 has
been published. This issue includes individual country articles
as well as an overview of the Iran-Iraq war and a political risk
assessment of Gulf region countries. 25X1

MPS' unofficial final figures reveal that the DI exceeded by
$22,000 its CFC goal of $92,358. Participation rate was about
40% and the average gift was about $93.00.
A EURA manager participated in a "Public Diplomacy
Simulation" exercise run by the NSC. Three teams -- Red
(Soviet), Blue (US), and White (US and West European public
opinion) -- evaluated the Geneva Summit, likely strategies for
the next summit, and public reactions.
A SOVA officer briefed the Combined Air Warfare School at
the Air War College, Maxwell AFB, on probable Soviet air
operations in the opening days of a European conflict.
SOVA hosted a brown bag lunch discussion of Gorbachev's
foreign policy style and agenda.
OSWR, ALA, and the NIO/AL briefed Ambassador Richard T.
Kennedy on the recent Memorandum to Holders to the SNIE on
Brazil's nuclear program. Ambassador Kennedy had a number of
questions regarding how the paper might be used to help him in
his forthcoming trip to Argentina and Brazil.

OSWR organized and co-hosted with NPIC an interagency
meeting on chemical and biological weapons It was 25X1
sufficiently productive that quarterly meetings are planned.
Briefings on the Hill
There were 21 briefings on the Hill this past week.
OIA and NESA briefed Congressman Wilson on the Afghanistan
analysis project, Mujahadeen successes, and current trends and
future prospects in Afghanistan.
SOVA briefed Congressmen Dornan and Smith on the Soviet
Politburo, and an SSCI staffer on the impact in the USSR of the
war in Afghanistan.
ALA spent a lot of time on the Hill this week. It briefed
the House Western Hemisphere Affairs Subcommittee on the
political, economic, and military situations in Nicaragua, joined
Assistant Secretary of State Crocker in briefing the SSCI on
Angola, briefed Congressman McEwen of HPSCI on Guatemala's runoff
election, and briefed SSCI staffer Natalie Bocock on the economic
situation in Panama, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile and on the debt25X1
situation in South America.
