SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report 5 - 9 August 1985
DCI/DDCI Assigned Tasks
ACIS organized a briefing session for ACDA Director Adelman
and his senior advisors on US responses to Soviet telemetry
encryption.
SOVA has completed an ACIS delivered analysis of Soviet
proposals in Round II of the NST talks, requested by the
President's National Security Advisor.
NESA prepared talking points on PLO-Jordan and the peace
process; and with OGI prepared a memorandum on Saudi oil policy
and spending decisions.
OSWR prepared a memo regarding possible compromise of US
nuclear weapon design information to the Soviets.
SOVA prepared talking points on Expansion of the Soviet
Industrial Experiment.
Of Special Interest This Week
ACIS attended IGs on START, SDI, and Arms Control and Public
Diplomacy.
ACIS met with staffers to Senators Byrd and Nunn concerning
the Senators' upcoming trip to Moscow.
ACIS met with Sy Weiss from PFIAB on verification issues.
ALA briefings on the Hill included Congressman Fazio; the
HPSCI staff (Kenya, Zambia, and Nigeria); and the House Foreign
Affairs Committee staff (Ecuador, Chile, and Uruguay).

EURA hosted a briefing session for Ambassador Richard Burt.
EURA met with Assistant Secretary Ridgwa on critical
substantive issues, the 1986 research program
EURA also briefed Commerce Assistant Secretaries Vargo and
Ludolph on West European economic developments.
NESA briefed the staff of the US Marine Amphibious Unit
which is scheduled to deploy to the Mediterranean this summer.
NESA discussed Iranian and Iraqi issues with State's
Director of Northern Gulf Affairs.
NESA met with' representatives from DIA to discuss DoD
assistance on analysis of Afghanistan, and met with
representatives of Orkand Corporation on terms of reference of an
alternative assessment.
NESA also briefed Under Secretary of Defense Pillsbury on
Indian military developments.
OEA briefed staffers from SSCII labout current 25X1
developments in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and
developments in North-South relations.
OGI drafted an unclassified paper on International Terrorism
for the SSCI.
OGI briefed Senator Biden's staff on Mexican narcotics
issues prior to their scheduled travel next week to Mexico City
for discussions with the Embassy and DEA officials.
OGI discussed foreign investment issues with Allen Lenz,
Director, Office of Trade & Investment Analysis, Department of
Commerce.
OSWR briefed Ambassador Burt on the technology transfer
problem.

SOVA discussed changes in Soviet political and military
leadership with staffers of the Senate Armed Forces Committee.
SOVA briefed the Air War College and Army Aviation Command
on Soviet air-to-air helicopter doctrine.
SOVA and OSWR briefed the CNO's Executive Panel on the
Soviet R&D process and estimating RDT&E expenditures.
SOVA prepared a briefing package for Dr. Ikle on the Soviets
in the Third World.
SOVA published a typescript on Soviet policy options and
initiatives the Gorbachev regime might pursue in the Middle East.
Looking Ahead
ALA will brief the Board of Governors of the Export-Import
Bank on political and economic issues in Nigeria;
OGI will join
terrorism in Europe.

OSWR wil meet with Dr. Maurice Roesch and Sydney Singer,
OSTP, to discuss Soviet ABM developments, prospects for Soviet
breakout of the ABM treaty, and Soviet directed-energy R&D.
