(LISTED BELOW) SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT1 'THIS 1S UNEVALUATED INFORMATION FOR THE RESEARCH USE OF TRAINED INTELLIGENCE ANALYSTS 50X1-HUM- 1. in 1944, Soviet forces began building an airfield at Liusbirgis (Linksmakalnis) : The name was erroneously (54046?N. 23056,N), Lithuania. :~Gommq reported as Liusbirgio The airfield lies east of the Kaunas- 50X1-HUM yrienai road and about 17 ions due south of Kaunas. 2. About 1,500 German We (including some technicians) were employed in the construction of the airfield under MVJJ supervision. When the airfield was completed in October 1947, the majority of the labor was transported away. Some 500 German PWs and 150 M9!) men remained. The German engineers now at the airfield have special privileges, e.g., their own servants in their homes. 3. In October 1947 the airfield had no runways or hangars. It had been levelled and on it had been built several massive concrete beds. The precise dimen- sions of these concrete beds is not known. but they are estimated to be over one meter deep. The concrete beds resemble, in size and appearance, large concrete defensive blockhouses with horizontal "roofs" and with no part pro- truding in the air. At or near the airfield there is a high tension power station. on the airfield there is "a long row 50X1-HUM- of about 200 concrete blocks, underneath which electric motors are built into the ground. These blocks are fenced in by thick. logs about three meters hi eh. On the east side there are wooden propel'. (aorzr-ent s appears to be describing the same installations in ti.io different wWe.) 50X1-HUM 40 guided missile research is in progress on the airfield. 50X1-HUM 5. The airfield is surrounded by barbed wire and guarded closely by Russian troops.. None of the persons working at the airfield nay leave the airfield. 6. The workshops at Rokai have been taken over by the Soviets to work exclusively for Liusbirgie requirements. During 1947, sizeable transports of gasoline and building materials were sent to Liusbirgis airfield, but up to late 1947 no items resembling Ymweapons had been sent there.
