BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES RESTORED
100 BRIDGES, OVERPASSES RESTORED IN 1ST YEAR OF THE 5-YEAR PLAN -- Budapest,
Szabad Nep, 5 Oct 50
The construction of nearly 100 bridges and viaducts has been projected for
the first year of the Five-Year Plan. Most important of these is the Stalin
Bridge in Budapest, connecting Obuda and Angyalfold, which will be completed
for the 7 November holiday. Reconstruction of the Boraros-teri Bridge in Buda-
pest has also begun. When finished, the, reconstructed bridge will be more
modern, wider, and will have greater capacity than the old bridge. Among
others, the Sajo Bridge at Miskolc and the Hernad Bridge at Pere will be opened
to traffic this year. To ease increased rail and highway traffic, so-called
"death crossings" will be eliminated by the construction of overpasses. Work
will be begun on four such overpasses this year.
Modern methods are being employed in the construction of these bridges and
the first aluminum and the first prefabricated ferroconcrete bridges will soon
be completed.

percent of the ruins of the old bridge were utilized in the new construction.
The 900-ton superstructure was completed by Hungarian Iron, Steel and Machinery.
(MAVAG) workers in 90 days, one month ahead of the estimated date.
On 1 October, a highway-railroad overpass was also dedicated at Nyekladhaz,
3 months ahead of schedule. It was built for 25,000 forints under the estimated
cost.
With the completiua of these two structures, there is a direct connection
between the expanding industrial area of Borsod County and the new irrigation
developments of the trans-Tisza region.
SPEED RAIL TURNOVhl FOR BEET CROP -- Budapest, Vilagossag, 4 Oct 50
The Pecs office of the Hungarian National Railroad (MAV) has prepared for
the successful collection of the sugar-beet crop by arranging undisturbed traffic
for the two sugar factories in its area, at Ercsi and Kaposvar. The beats arrive
at the factories on through-trains and the cars are speedily unloaded and returned
within 24 hours, or at the most 48 hours. This is helping to reduce the national
average of turnover time for freight cars.
