The Uaghestan Autonomous Republic is the first in the RSFSR
to effect pre-term fulfillment of the plan for antimalarial hydro-
technical work in 1949. Some 160 hectares of swamp land were
drained, and 182 hectares of drainage canals and ditches were
built. Large-scale work i.s being conducted in Khasavyurt Rayon,
where 150 hectares await drainage.
The Department of Parasitology and Medical Zoology of the
Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology imeni N. F. Gamaleya,
Academy of Medical Sciences USSR, directed by Ye. N. Pavlovskiy,
has dispatched two groups of scientific workers to protective
reforestation regions of Krasnodar and Stavropol krays. They will
study problems of medical parasitology and certain contagious dis-
eases of man.. Special attention will be given to the natural nidus
of diseases.
Groups of workers to atd medical institutions on Sundays are
being made up in all rayons of Voroshilovgrad Oblast. A tubercu-
losis hospital where lung operations will be performed has been
erected in Stanichno-Lugan_sk. Dr Krichevskiy, who has finished
a specialized course in the Kharkov Institute for Specialized
Medical Training, has come to the village. Twenty cases have
entered the hospital. This is the, first specialized institution
in a village in the Ukraine where lung operations are performed.
With th:. workers' aid repair work has been bompleted'ih
in most rayons. A hydropathir institution ror World War 11 in-
valids has been opened io. Starobelsk after major repairs. A dis-
pensary with ten medical cabinets has bee-constructed in Novo-Pskov.

Inhabitants of the polar region have medical service as good
as that available to.inhabitants of any other region of the 'USSR.
Frequently planes attached to the Medical Aviation Service at
Nar'yan-Mar fly.to various isolated settlements with modern medi-
cal aid to sealers, trappers, and fishermen.
In recent mcnths flights were made to,Vaygach Island to treat
a unter with antirabies serum, to Alekseyevka, a fishing station
on the eastern shore of the Barents Sea, to treat a.seriously
wunded fisherman, and to Nosovka to attend a birth. V. Semenov,

Wor'_c2s of the Scientific Research Institute of'Otorhinolaryn-
gology and Pharyngology (director, Professor Lopotko; scientific
director, Professor Voyachek; secretary of Party organization,

Study three subjects-in the field of professional diseases
of the upper respiratory passages in wore-Prs of the tobacco factory
imeni Kars T9Ftkin in addition to those scheduled for'1949;
Conduct a prophylactic check of all workers in the tobacco
factory imeni Klara Tsetkin and take into account all prolonged
cases of chronic tonsillitis, influenza, and catarrh of the upper
respiratory passages and carry out necessary measures;
Organize a scientific consultation and appraisal of instru-
ments produced by the "Krasnogvardeyets" Factory;
Conduct two field scientific sessions in Pskov and Novgorod
oblasts;
Send doctors into Novgorod, Velikiye Luki, Pskov, and Kalinin-
grad oblasts to aid in specialized service to the people;
Organize consultation visits of scientific workers of the
institute in five polyclinics twice a month;
Submit 30 lectures and reports on medical and natural
science ,s?ibjects.
