AQUATONE BRIEFING
On 24 February 1956 the DCI and rma briefed Senators
Russell (Chairman) and Saltonstall of the Senate Armed Services
Subcommittee on CIA. Also present were Colonel White and
Norman Paul. CIA, and Mr. William Darden of the Committee
staff. During this extensive general briefing the Director
described AQUATONE in considerable detail to the Senators,
who were keenly interested in it and had evidently not heard of
it before. The Director gave figures as to the size of this item
in his budget for the last two years and the projection for FY/1957.
The Director sought advice as to whether he should notify other
members of Congress about the project, and Senator Russell stated
that he thought Messrs. Ca1111011, Taber and Mahon, all of whom
are completely secure, should be informed.
18 November 1957. Learned from the DCI today that he
did talk to Taber and Cannon regarding AQUATONE.
