Wear- resistance tests, in their turn, based on friction against a rigidly affixed rotating piece of sandpaper, showed that the boridized specimens are nore wear- resistant than the carbidized specimens, and that both types of specinens are many times more we~r-resistant than the refractory base metal. Measurements of the microhardness f the diffusion coatingsdiowed that it approximates the microhard- ness of the corresponding phases of the stoichiometric composition. Finally, che- mical-resistance tests of the specimens, as based on the authors' tests of cor- rosion resistance in hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric, and phosphoric acids, as Card 2/3 L 3656--66 ACCESSION NR: AT5024878 well as in alkalis, showed that carbidized W is the most wear-resistant, as it virtually does not interact with nitrier/sulfuric, and phosphoric acids, while it only weakly interacts with alkali so utions. Of the boronized specimens, bo- ronized W and Mo are the most corrosion resistant. These investigations are only in their initial stage, and they will be continued. The authors detail the method used to calibrate the photomultiplier outputs 'in terms of the Z-range of Input excitation; for example, for the type FEU-35 exter-4. Inal counter, the anode output characteristic corresponded to the range from Z " 4 ,to Z - 21, and the output of the 7th dynode, to the range Z - 6 to Z - 28. The technique was to excite a SIC electrolumineacent diode with a high-vol-i itage, short-duration (4-30 nsec) thyratron pulse. providing the phototube with a Aight input similar to a counter input. Early results from theme primary particle counterR9 obtained during the IQSY, have been a useful supplement to analogous satel- lite data from the 1959-1962 period, during which solar activity was undergoing the transition from maximum to minimum. Comparative results are seen In Fig. 2, which shows an almost twofold increase in nuclear particles recorded near the solar activity. minimum. The equipment consisted of a Cerenkov coun- ter mounted within the satellite behind 1.5 g/cm2 of matter and a telescope com- posed of a Cerenkov counter and a scintillation counter, mounted outside the satek lite behind 0.6 g/cm2 of aluminum. All the counters could recori cosmic ray parti, cles with energies exceeding 600'Mev/nucleon. The external tele9cope recorded nu- Card clei with charge numbers of 2 or greater, and the external Cerenkov counter, which was part of the telescope, also recorded very heavy nuclei with charge numbers near 30. Nuclei with charge numbers not leas than 2, 5, or 15 were recorded in separate chnnnels by the Internal Corenkov counter. The counters were teatcd and calibrated In the Inboratory with the aid of cosmic ray particles; the associtted photomulti- pliern were calibrated with fInshes from a SIC diode. Preliminary results are com- parod with analogous data recorded with the Second Soviet Cosmic Rackets the Third Soviet Satellite Vehicle, aW the Mnrn 1. A strong negative correlation to indi- cated between solar activity and the intenatty of the nuclear component of the cosmic radiation. The Intensity of the nuclear component nearly doubled between the flIghts of the Second Cosmic Rocket in 1959 and the Electron 2 in 1964. It to anticipated that when the data recorded with the Electron 2 are processed they will provide information concerning the dependence of the nuclear component on solar activity. A number of solar flares occurred in February and March during the flight of the Electron 2. Analysis of the data recorded during these flares is awaited with great interest. In-ta, 1955, Vol. 1, Nr 2, pp. 147-149 ABSTRACT: The author explains the principle for doubling the scanning length of scales of automatic potentiometers or bridges, by the introduction of fixed resistors which are short-circuited In a definite sequence by the contacts of an auxiliary relay when the carriage reaches either end of the scale. It Is possible to design instruments with triple or higher scanning of the scale. The accuracy of the instruments Is improved by the use of fixed resistors which are more accurate than a elide wire, and by the greater useful length of the scale. The results obtained are of special character. Here the authors try to generalize the problems and to obtain formulae characterizing a sufficiently wide class of diagrams i--fith rectifiers. First a circuit with a reactive element is investiCated, namely a circuit with a rectifier in form of a fourpole, at the Inlet of which an harmonic electromotive force u I - Um sin(4.ot +,P) applies and the only element (in this case the capacity) is connected with the output. It is asoumed that the rectifier has a linearly discontinuous charactaristic, It is assumed that the current in the recti- Card 112 fier3 at the moment t - 0 and t - t 0 is equal to zero. The, system in derived fron two transcendent equatJons for 9 and P (6). Then a circuit vrith two reactive elements is investigated. The second element in a capacity or an inductivity. It is shown that al3o in this case the equation (6) holds if the mentioned de.- notations are understo-L-d by the quantities contained in the equation. An analoeous formula is obtained when two inducti- vities are contained in the diagram. It is maintained that equation (6) compri3es a wide class of diagrams. The solu- tion of (6) is numerically very difficult. Therefore a graph-, ic solution is given and an example is calculated through. It is assumed that the measured voltage and the noise voltage are sinusoidal functionei of time with non-multipl* frequencies. Formulae for the determination of errors in the usual rectifying apparatus and in the phase-shif*ensitive rectifying apparatus with different formsof the control signal are-obtained. Here a method is* Eiven for determin- ing tie D. C. components of currents and voltages in all elements of this class of scheme. The nonlinear circuit to represented in the form of a four-pole. It is shown that Determining the Dirpnt Current Components of Currents SOV/105-59-1-8/29 and Voltages 4-n Rectifier Circuits for this it is sufficient to find the D. An important version of frequency div:ders iii an instrument dividing the frequency by two (Fig, 1)., The secondary is an oscillating circuit with variable natural frequency. The windlnCs w, connected to an alternating voltage source via a resis- tance R 1 and a diode act as both exciting and magnetizing windings. Six differential equations defining the frequency divider are given. These equations are difficult to solve. Therefore this frequency divider was very thoroughly examined experimentally, The regions of stable and re- prcducible conditions of frequency division and the relationships bet- Card 31459 S/651/61/000/005/'OCre Magnetic frequency dividers D209/D305 de-n p,~wer transfer coefficient and circuit parameters were examined. In order to rectify the second harinonic outl-.ut voltage of high-sensitivity magnetic amplifiers with fre- quency doublinL.-, phase sensitive detectors utilizing symmetrical non-li- near resistors are normally used. The author suggests the application of zilicon voltaj;e stabilizers connected in series oppositioL. The tests ca- rried out sho wed that it was comParetively easy to select silicon stabi- lizers with the same voltage to within 1%. The circuits shown in Fig. 3 were investigated. (L'vov) TITLE: Magnetic modulator of the second harmonic with a feed from a quadratic shift diagram PERIODICAL: Avtomatika i telemekhanika, v. 22, no. 2, 1961, 236-242 TEXT: The construction of magnetic modul4tors of the second harmonic in which no filters are used in control and exciting circuits, is reEarded as a problem of major importance. The second harmonic in the signal circuit can be eliminated by feeding the exci 'tation coils of the magnetic modulator by two current sources, whose voltages are shifted ..tutually by 900. The odd harmonics in the control and output coil are, however, not eliminEted by this circuit, and it is, therefore necessary to make use of a circuit with four cores (Fig. 1). The two voltages whose frequencies are mutually shifted by 900 are obtained by using a frequency division. A phase shift of 1801 is no problem today. If these two voltages are each divided by a frequency divider into two voltages with half the frequency, these two voltages will then have a relative phase relation of 900. The diagram Card 1/4 89179 S/103/61/022/002/OIC/015 Magnetic modulator of the B019/Bo6o shown in Fig. 2 is indicated as the frequency divider, and it is said to offer the advantage of doing without separatp d-c sources. Fie. 3 is a graph illustrating the stability ranges of the frequency division of this circuit in the dimensionless coordinatesE = U 1m /w,S.,Bsand 2 2 k - R1w 2/R Hwi,where m - RHC. The stable ranges presented in this figure have been obtained by generalizing experimental results. The chief advan- tage of the frequency divider considered here is the fact that the output voltage practically contains no even harmonic. It is especially important that this property does not depend on the form of the feed voltage. Thus, the use of such a frequency divider makes it possible to appreciably reduce requirements as to the form of the feed voltagep and, furthermore, excludes filters in this circuit. Fig. 4 shows the diagram of a modulator with a current feed Vq~~Lcpadratic shift circuit. The circuit was set up on the basis of foregoing findings. The voltage amplificatiqn factcr amounts to 600 and the power fluctuation in the case of the feell voltage fluctu- ating by about -~ 10~- amounts to jo13 watts.
