here the spectrum of S has negative eigenvalues the absolute value of

It is pointed out that the approximations given in (Ref. 2) ban also be
used if they are submitted to some transformations.

The method of successive approximations as applied

TEXT: An approximation to the biharmonic operator AAu is found
for equilateral-triangle nets. Using square- and equilaterial-tri-
snlge nets,, problems relating to the buckling of rigidly fixed
lates were solved by the electronic computers CEAM (SEW and Y'WB
yyiv). The biharmonic equation
U
AAU (X,Y) - _Rx,y)
is given in the bounded domain G. The domain G is replaced by the
net region Gh by means'of square or equilateral-triangle nets. The

unilateral or central differences. Only the values of the function
at the nodal points are considered; 46u is approximated by differ-
ences. Setting
TG.hu (A) an ~; d(Akn) u (A + Akn), (3)
where Akn are the coordinate-increments on passing from nodal point
A to the neighboring nodal point (A +.Ak,,), one obtains a system of
m difference equations with m unknowns:
u(A) .- TG.I~i(A) + f (A), (4)
where the linear operator TG.h is a symmetrical matrix with elements
and (Akn) (an is either +1 or -1). Further, only almost-periodic
functions are considered. The eigenfunctions of the operator Th
are found. The eigenvalues of the operators TG.h lie in the inter-
