Title : The Results of an Investigation of the Cultivation of Peat Soils by T,S. Malltsev'G Method. Orig Pub : Vionik All LIBER, 1957, iio 6, 28-35- Abstract : As a result of two years of experiments by the Sarenskaya Scientific Research Station and the Panfilov Marsh Field on the problem of putting marshes under cultivation, it has been discovered that the best way to till peat soils for planting them in potatoes is ordinary plowing which turns up the sod to a depth of 27-30 cm. This kind of tilling resulted in potato yields of from 142.6 to 156 centner8 per hectare. When plowing was done at a depth Card 1/2 - 52 - s USSR/Soil Science - Cultivation, Melioration, Erosion. J. Abs Jour Ref Zhur - DIU., Ila 15, 1958, 67968 of 35-40 cm., and the cod turned up, the potato yield was reduced by 1.1.9-13%; whou after discingi the plowine was done at a depth of 35-40 cm., and without zoldboards, the yield dropped by 28-36%. The latter method of tilling dried peat soils increased the moisture content in the plowed horizono In the dry year 1955, when ground wutu2 dropped to a depth of 165 meters, Mal'toev's method of tillage gave a potato yield of 173 centners/hectare, au against a yield of 157 contners using the ordinary me- thod. -- S,A, Nikitin Card 2/2 TYULENST, M.0 Moda of action of Smirnov mineral waters. PERIODICALt "Svarochnoye Proizvodstvo", 1957, #3, pp 26-27 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The standard 'IrOCT4416-48" for electrode marble requires uni- form light gray or white color, and a content of calcium car- bonate (CICO 3) of not less than 92%, of magnesium oxide (MgO) not over 3 %, of sulfur not over 0.04 %, and of phosphorus not over 0,015%. The marble deposite in Chelyabinsk region, as well as in the Karelo-Finn SSR and in Alma-Ata region satisfy these conditionag but there exist other deposits, not remompended for apparently the sole reason that they are not sufficiently ex- plorod, Such an example represents the Crimean marble which is presently mined near Balaklava and the village Kadykovka for the southern metallurgical indubtry,, The Crimean marble has the same chemical composition as the white Urals marble. The applicability of the Crimean marble has been experimentally Card 1/2 investigated in comparison with the Urals marble, in electrode 135-3-~--V'4.74 TITLEt Applying Crimean Marble for Electrode Coating (Primeneniye krymakogo mramora v slektrodnom pokrytii). coatings 1")OHO-13/4511 and "VOM-13/55"q and the Crimean marble is found fully applicable~ The color of marble appears to bo of no significance, The components of the "'IM111-type coating are specified as followas Crimean marble, feldspar, quartg,. ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, farrotitanium, and sodium sili- cate, Their content, in percent of weight, in the co#ting for electrodes " )-42A" and " )-50V respectively.,is stated in the article. The designs of jetno=-Ies tested are shown in Fig 1 and table 1. Hot air from regenerators was supplied through special flues lined with refractory bricks and is introduced into the port through a special tuyere mixer, as an injection medium compressed air was used. It was found that: 1) at a pressure of compressed air of about 2.5 atm and its consumpt ion of 330 n m3/hr, about 1650 n m3/hr of preheated air is injected into the gas port. This amounts to about 10% Card 113 of the total amount of air supplied to the furnace; '~UV/l-~)-59-4-5/32 Thermotechnical Investigation of Open Hearth Furnace Jet Nozzles Injecting Air Into Gas Ports 2) durinG the period when -the waste gas is passing throuE~i the gas port, the tuyere of the injector can pass from the air flue to the gas flue about 1200 n m3/hr of waste gas; this amounts to 5 to ?Yo of the total amount of the waste gas; 3) the injection of cold air into the gas port is accompanied by an increase (in comparison with.,a Ventuii type port) in the flame temperature at the first dooi of 20 to 2500 while the injection of hot air - by an iiierease of 40 to 500C (Fig 2 and 3). This increases 2U-11-le flov; of heat to the bath with cold air by 3% and with hot air up to 81,"', (at -the first door) Fig 4. L?imultaneously, the heat absorption of the bath also increases see Fig 5; 4) the injection of air into the Gas port leads to a Dartial combustion of fuel in the port and to a decrease in the proportion of not completely burned fuel (table 2); 5) when injecting hot air the dynamic pressure of the stream of gas at the outlet from the port increases approximately 1.5 times. The in3rease in the, dynai.iic pressure and the temperature of the flame leads to an increase in the flame velocity Card 2/3 see Fig ?; 6) with increasin6 pressure of compressed 'OV/133-59-4-5/32 Thermotechnical Tnvesti,-)a'uion of Open Hearth Furnace Jet Nozzles Injecting Air into Gas Ports air in the injector the static pressure in the Cas uptake also increases (Fig 8); 7) with the injection of hot air into Gas port the duration of heats decreases and the productivit-y of furnaces increases (in comparison virith operation with the Venturi type port or with the injection of cold air). It is cousidered that the experiments shuald be continued in order to establish the most rational placinL; of the injecting tuyeres to decrease duot deposition in the tuyeres to a minimuia. These investigations proved that the consumption of ethylene glycol can be reduced(from three mols to two) by introducing the DMT part at a time, and that it is possible to usel~dommercially pure N2 or air -(instead of purified N.), triphenyl phoopfiate (1) at the rate of O-4-Va of the DMT being peed as the antioxidant..
