ABSTRACT: The sensitivity to antibiotics and nitrofuran of 312 strains of
Salmonella enteritidis, chosen at random from 5053 strains isolated in Poland,
was tested by the filter-pap er -disk method. Group 1 (4. 416) was sensitive to.
streptomycin, paromomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, polymyxin B,

colistin, and nitrofurantoin; group 11 (2. 3%) to chloramphenicol, polypeptide
antibiotic a,-. and nitrofuran; group 111 (93. 3%) only to polypeptide antibiotics and
nitrofurantoin. Minimum inhibitory concentrations determined by the serial
dilution method were 2. 5-10 Wtglml for colistin, and 12 .1(xg1ml for nitor'-,
furantoin. Ampicillin (alpha- aminobenzylpenicillin) concentrations of 0. 6-1.' 2'
/,4g/ml inhibited the growth of all group I strains and 2% of group II strains. The
remaining strains were able to grow in 200 /exg/ml Ampicillin concentrations'.
The patients' age and geographic area distribution had an effect on strain
sensitivity rating. Strains sensitive only to polypeptide antibiotics and nitro-
furantoin, isolated from children two years old or younger, amounted to 96. 31c.'

ABSTPJ%CT: The article divides possible attack zones into two areas: (a) where vhe
interceptor aims upon emerging into the initial attack position; (b) the firing
area. The extent of the firing area is governed by three groups of factors: (1)
the characteristics of the missile; (2) the capacities of the interceptor and its
aiming system, (3) the features of the target aircraft. The "Sidewinder" missile
is used as the example for the construction of a possible firing.area. "Ine distan-
ces and speeds relative to the interceptor and the target are designated mathemati-
cally and with diagrams, as are necessary data pertaining to the missile itself. .
The heat emitted from the aircraft is also shown to affect the extent of the firing
area. The effects of maneuvering capabilities of the missile and the interceptor

ABSTRACT: A number of derivatives of sow Banfield-type stable free radicals were
synthesized with substitutions in the aromatic ring (o-, m- and p-CH3; m- and p-F;
m- and p-Cl, m- and p-Br, and m-NO2). According to the experimental data, only such
derivatives can be prepared in satisfactory yields which do not carry electron-donor
or electron-acceptor substituents of overly excessive activity. The condensation
reaction is, in general, impeded by substitution in the o-position. Experiments were
also carried out to elucidate the mechanism of the condensation. The infrared spectra
of the prepared canpounds were recorded. In addition, the electron spin resonance
spectra of the free radicals were also determined. Of the latter, the esr spectrum of
the original compound and the interpretation of this spectrum are published. The
authors thank Doctor A. Messmer and D. Chem for the valuable assistance in recording
the infrared spectra, and Mrs. G. SzilLagyi, Scientific officer for performing the
microanalyses. Further thanks is extended to Miss J. Kozeluha and Mr. L. Sumegi for

Abstract: An epidemic outbreak of Plexner dysentery affecting
150 persons occurred in a military detachment after members of
the detachment did summer farm work in localities in which
cases of dysentery had been recorded among the civilian popula-
tion, Prophylactic and sanitary-antlepedemlo measures had
little effect on the course of the outbreak, which,continued
for 10 days and consisted of cycles with a duration of )-4
days, with the maximum number-of new cases',occuring In the
middle of each cycle. The length of the incubation period in
infections with this disease is 3-4 days. -One may assume that
the outbreak was due to lack of immunity on the part of members
of the detachment affected and that it decreased In Intensity
s!.s soon as Immunity was acquired. The resistance of the person-
nel to infection may have been lowered because of overstrain
due to training: greater emphasis on activities not requiring

A new remedy, ditodolein, was Introdu~ed Into the treatment of microsporon
ringworm of the scalp by the Mycological Department of the Central Dermato-
logicall-Venereological Institute. Ninety patients (89 children and one adult) were
treated with dilodolein which was rubbed into the patches twice a day; the affected
hairs were epilated every Sth or 6th day. Seventy-three patients recovered com-
pletely. in an average of 60 days' time. No side-effects were observed during
