Abstract I An account is given of the increasing attention given to the
growing of walnut trees (Jugla:ns regia) in the Republic of Molda-
via. The high food value of the walnut is explained with
figures for the vitamins and organic compounds contained in
it. The ability of the walnut tree to thrive in dry soil
and to grow in terrain not suitable for agriculture is pointed
out, Illustrations.

TEXT; The differential cross-sections of elastic scattering
of protons (with energy of 19.6 Mev) by nuclei of the separated
isotopes Co59, Cu 65, Cd 116 , Sn 116 ~ Sn 124 are calculated. The
optical model was used, spin-orbit coupling being taken into
account. The real part of the potential was taken in Saxon's
form, the imaginary part--in daussian form. The results of the
calculations show that for acattering angles between 20 - 40 6
no satisfactory agreement with experiment could be obtained.

All attempts to improve the agreement between calculated and
experimental values were in vain. Agreement was good only for
0059 for the entire angular interval, except at small angles.
On the other hand, for Cu 65 considerable discrepancies occurred'i
even at angles exce "'ding 135 The experimental values (for all
the isotopes under investigation) were much higher than the cal-
culated ones. The shape of the angular distribution of elasti-
cally scattered protons with energy 19.6 Mev was more complex
than that of pro-tons with 5.45 and 6.8 Mev. The angular aistri-
but-*on curves for Co59 protons, calculated by means of the
Gaussian form of the imaginary potential on the one hand, and
by Saxon's form on the other, differed greatly for large scat-
tering angles. The use of Saxon's form for the imaginary part
of the potential does not yield good agreement with experiment
for any of the nuclei under investigation. The parameters of
the optical model differ greatly for heavy and light nuclei;

ABSTRACT: Three basic technical parameters of railroad exca-
vations are analyzed, with a view to decreasing the
work volume in construction of principal railroad cuts.
These parameters are as follows: 1) the longitudinal
grade, depending on the freight traffic, the kind of
traction, the type of locomotive, and the type of usage;
2) the width at the bottom of the cut, which is de-

methods of water removal; 3) the steepness of grade, which is
determined by the geotechnical properties of the foundation over
which the cut will run. A graphic method for calculation of the
steepness of the controlling grade is proposed. This should take
into account the safety factor in movement of the trains. Three
cases of possible calculations are analyzed, and are presented in
the form of curves of the function Qlb = f(i) and Q"b = f(i), where
i is the controlling grade; Q'b is the weight of the train determin6d
from the required freight volume; Q11 b is the weight of the train for
the given locomotive of known characteristics. An example is given
of determining the value of the controlling grade and the weight of
the train. A method of analysis of the grade with respect to the
braking system of the train is included. Here adoption of a braking
distance of 100 m is recommended, and curves are drawn up for the
brake pressure per 100 tons of the train weight (velocity of 10 to
15 km/hr on tracks-1524 mm wide). It is noted that tone sizes of the
aradpion of cuts, as given in Pravila tekhnicheskoy ekspluatatsii
Ru.

(the Rules of Technical Use), are incorrect. Accurate sizes are
proposed for these foundations. These correspond to structural
elements of the upper part of the route, to the types of tracks, to
the class of soil, to the freight traffic, and to the load on the
axle of the moving body. The author emphasizes the necessity for
designing grades on the basis of groundwater investigations in all
cases where the depth of the approach or of the cuts exceeds 12 m
to 15 m. The method of N. P. Puzyrevskiy, supplemented by consider-
ation of the forces involved in coupling, is recommended for calcu-
lation of grades. A formula is given for determining the coordinates
of the points of the curve of slip.
