Abstract It was found that in Estonia myoglobinuria affects
horses of all ages notwithstanding the fact that
they are well fed; it affects, however, colts to
one year of age mostly. The main role in causing
the disease is played by toxic factors, particu-
7qrly products of decomposition which are formed
ao a result of the overstraining of the organism,
and the toxic substances found in poor qualitv

Inv estigatift-s-orpreoperative preparation of the hands by it wjjrM 3% solution of
zinc sulphate and sterilization of rubber gloves gave the following results: the
average numbor of sterile cultures ofgtoves'jutce on meat peptone broth equalled
67.95v of the total, while the average number of colonies in Petri dishes with meat
peptone agar was 2.5. These results allow the recommendation of this solution of
zinc sulphate for preoperative treatment of the hands both when sterile rubbet
gloves are used and when they are not used. (IX. 17)

ABSTRACT- The corrosion resistanc'e of carbon and stainless steels
Kh-13, Kh-17, Kh18N9 was investigated in crude and purified
methylene bromide (BM-2). In the course of the experiments
the solution was stirred periodically. The rate of corrosion of
stainless steels was somewhat greater (by 20-50 percent, an the
average) in the crude product 'than in the purified methylene
bromide. On the corrosion resistance scale the stainless steels
occupy a position on the border line between completely
corrosion- resistant materials and materials which exhibit
adequate corrosion- resistant properties. Unalloyed steel, which
was tested in the crude methylene.bromide only, was found to be
more corrosion-resistant than stainless steel and may, therefore,

ABSTRACT: Experiments with aluminum alloy D-16, kept in aqueous NaOH (pH 13) at
20C for 22-600 days, showed that the corrosion rate decreased with time from 13. 5 to
1. 9 g/m2. hr, due to formation of an oxide film. Other experiments in which the alloy
was kept in solutions at pH 7-13 for 25 days at temperatures of 120, 50 and 90C showed
that corrosion increased somewhat with increasing temperataip, but decreased markedly.
with decreasing pH, becoming insignificant at pH 9-10. Finally, the anti-oorrosion
properties of a number of organic sulfo compounds were tested at pH 13 (e*sure for

rate becomes almost as rapid an in the pure solution in the absence of petroleum.
Addition of gypsum markedly decreases:the corrosion rate,, which booftes practically

possibilities for protecting aluminum alloys from corrosion in a3lcaline media,, The
surface-active Inhibitor NChK (Petrov4s contact) was also tested in the presence of
10% petroleum and adsorbents. The corrosion rate was lawer in the presence of chalk
than in the presence of clay, because the latter adsorbs more NW than chalk. In
the presence of 10 g of NGhK per liter in the presence of gypsump practioaU'v rto corro-

A3STIRACT: The inhibiting effect of furfurolimine (furfural aldimine) on the corrosion
of SL-3 steel was investiCatcd in 5, 10, 15, and 20% solutions of HU at temperaturea
="1-80G. The tests for 5 hours in 5%,HOl at 28C showed that the corrosion rate decreased
sharply with tho addition of increased amount:; of furfurolimine inhibitor and reached
~7`11 protective effect with the addition of 12 g/1 of inhibitor. Furfurolimino was an
effective inhibitor at all HM concentrations. Tho corrosion rate of stool sharply
decreased with the addition of small amounts of inhibitor (-11%). A hig"her concentra-
tion of inhibitor, especially ;in weak acid tolutions, did not bring about a further
decrease in corrosion rate and the protective effect of inhibitor renainod constant
after reaching an initial mwdmum. An increase in tomporaturo of the 5v 10, and 15% HG3
solutions from 30 to 800 increased the protective effect of the inhibitor, whereas a
small decrease in the protective effect of the inhibitor was observed in a 20% HG1
