TITLE: Photostimulated electron emission from alkali-halide cry-
stals excited by ultraviolet radiation

TEXT: The author studied exoelectron emission of KBr and KCl:T1
crystals excited by ultraviolet radiation and de-excited by visi-
ble light. The main results were presented at the Nintlh All-Union
Conference on Luminescence held in Kiyev in June, 1960. KBr was ir-
radiated with ultraviolet in the exciton absorption region and
KC!:Tl- in the region of the 1S->1P transition in Tl+. Ultraviolet

radiation was obtained from a condensed spa.rk between All Zn or Cu
electrodea. After excitation the crystals were kept in darkness

which produced exoelectron emission. Visible light was obtained
from a 30 W lanp and the required wavelengthe were selected with a
YM-2/'UM-2) monochromator. A Geiger counter was used to measure
electron emission; it had a central Pt wire electrode of 0.1 mm

iameter with a 0.35 mm diameter ball at the end. 2800 Ir was ap-

plied to the wire from dry batteries 330-_43MILP-4000(330-EVMTBG-
1000'. Pulses were amplified with a OP(,(BGS) unit of a 6-X(B-2)
;eter'; they were counted with a ratemeter of Tyullpan type and re-
corded with a 311fl-09 (EPP-09) automatic recorder. Pulses were mo-
nitored on a C14-4 (SI-1 ) oscillograph. The distance between the
ballk. at the end of the counter wire and the crystal was about 3 mm.
Excitation and stimulation (de-excitation) spectra of exoelectron
emission were recorded. The excitation and stimulation spectra re-
present here the exoelectron emission intensity, divided by thE in-
tensity of the exciting or stimulating radiation, and plotted a.g-
ainst'the exciting or stimulating wavelength. The results obtained
showed clearly that electrons were emitted from surface F-centers
by direet optical ionization of these centers. The exoelectron

emission on excitatiQia of Tl+ in KC!:Tl oonfirmed that phosphores-
cence of KC1:Tl+ is of recombination type. Acknowledgments are made

TEXT: After excitation of KC1-In phosphors in the region of the 1SO P1
band of activator absorption, photostimulated electron emission was detected.
Excitation of pure KC1 single crystals in this region virtually does not give
rise to the effect. The excitation spectrum of photostimulated electron emission
of KCl-In evinces a maximum which coincides, within the range of the measurement
error, with the 1 30 - 1P, absorption band of In centers,-and which is absent in
pure KC1. The similarity of the spectral characteristics of the excitation of
photostimulated electron emission and the recombination luminescence of KCI-In
(as well as KCl-Tl) phosphors attests to the n-type (rather than p-type)mode of
recombination luminescence.

LMT: The intrinsic photoeffect in 1Mr and KBr-In crystals was studied
througfi'the photostimulated conductivity appearing on illumination of a preli-
minarily excited crystal by visible light. The excitation spectrum of photo-
stimulated conductivity from F centers for pure KBr encompasses the longwave
drop of the exciton absorption,band (-195 - 210 ma.); in tLs case, F centers
arise as a result of the interaction between excitons and crystal defects. In
KC1-In this photostimulated conductivity was detected after intensive irrad'la-
tion by 2,537-R Hg line, which caused, in the crystal, 'S0_"~IpIelectron tran-
sition5 in the In+ center. The conclusion is reachedthat the protracted lu-
minescenQe of KBr-In is accompanied by photoelectric phenomena and displays the
character of an electron recombination luminescence.

TEXT: This paper was presented at the 9th conference on luminesc4:-nce
(crystal phosphors), Kiyev, June 20 to 25, 1960. Al-ready in earlier
papers the authors used electrical methods instead of absorption and
luminescence methods when investigating the mechanism and the kine-,ios c.
physical processes causing luminescence and color ceniers for alkali 'nalide
crystals. In these studies the KBr, KC!, NaC1, KBr--Tl, KOI-T-'*, and NaCl-TI
crystal phosphors were exoited by means of ultraviolet radiation of an Al
spark discharge whose individual lines were separated by means of a rn~)no-
chromator. In accordance with western data the contour of the
spectrum of the emission of a KBr crystal differs from that of the F-
absorption bands, however, it increases into the direction of Shorter

waves with hVIM 1.6 ev. When determining the effect of de-excitation of
the visible light on the emission of a photo-excited KBr cryotal it. T-az,
found that photoemission was caused by the F-centers, This is p_rovcd by
the hypothesis of the direct optical ejection of an electron from the
F-center into the vacuum. As may be seen from Fig. 1 the contour of a
short-wave activator absorption band is observed in a X01-Tl phosphor in
the spectrum of photostimulated emission and also in the photostimulated
F-luminescence band.. These activator absorption bands correspond to the
1 1 +_ -
so P, transiticiis in the T1 ions. Also the phcsphcre5cPIoe
spectrum has the same form. Hence, direct electric measurement da"a are
available on the recombination mechanism of phosphorescence iji :he
KCI-Tl phosphorus. After excitation of an NaCl-Tl phosphor by me-ails of
ultraviolet light in the shortwave activator band also a therraostimulated
electron emission can be observed (Fig. 2). The authors found thiat the
stages of thermal decoloration at 420, 440, and 5200K are accompanied by
electron emission. The authors infer a surface-type emission and a
volume-type absorption from the fact that the stages of thermal decolora-
tion at low temperatures are not accompanied by emission. The close re-la-

TEXT: Post electron emission is difficult to investigate
because it is normally very weak; however, in the case of
RbCl-Tl (0.05 mole 0/a Tl) it is sufficiently strong for an
investigation to be undertaken. Using a double focussing
monochromator for excitation and a Geiger counter for measuring
the electron emission, a spectrum of the post electron emission
is obtained. It is shown that this spectrum coincides with
absorption band for RbCl-Tl within the limits of experimental
error and corresponds to the
ISO -4 1 Pi and Iso ---~ 3P2 electron transitions in the T1+
cpntres, Post electron emission~is no t excited in the 248 mix

region of the absorption band (IS --- 3P transition).
Unactivated RbCl and TICI itself do not exhibit post electron
emission, showi-hg thdt the e1e6troA enassion is caused by the Tl+
.centres Iin RbC1.- The post electron emiEksion ape-ctra are similar
in character to phosphorescence spectra *n the alkali halides,
suggesting that similar physical processes occur in both effects.
The spectrum of photo-stimulated emission from RbCl-Tl is also
measured and shown to be similar in character to the photo-
stimulated emission spectra of other phosphors investig&ted by
the author.'

A13STRACT: The activator internal photoconductivity in the HBr-In crystal phosphor
has been investigated. An attempt has been made to obtain new exporimentual values
for processes accompanying delocalizod activator excitation and to,acquire photo-
-electric confirmation of long wave-length radiation recombinevion in these crysta3s.-
Excitation spectra for various pure (KBr., KC1. XI) and activated',a~kali-halide
crystals were obtained in the region 200-320 mp on the SF-4 speetrometer. The
excitation spectra of activated crystal photoconductivity show a.jainimun in the
region of the activator center absorption band. The.pure crystals-were prepared

Photocurrents were measured tlxough a micro-x-ray device called "Kaktus" with

the photoconductivity excitation spectra in coarse features Icoincides with the

quantum yield spectra of KBr-1n phosphorescence obtained for h~-
