Thq laboratory work was primarily done at the Institute,, ind"'Irial experftnents were performed by the Aluminum industry.: Investigation methods' employed:~Electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, crystal-i optical and chemical, methods of'analysis. Earlier stages of the authors' work we,r'e published in cited references. (1) Processeir of dissolution (leaching). Hydrargillite crystals in unsat-: urate alumina solutions, when heated to nearib. p., break up into fragments. Upon., this initial comminqtion, they dissolve prorr~ptly. Diaspore crystals usually dis- solve at the faces, *i~h the formation of fissures and perforations. At times, -the' holes in bernite or diaspore exhibit a sharply defined hexagonal shape. When Al hydroxides with addittons of Si oxides are leached, growths of fairly e -quiaxial... crystalline formations of Na hydroalumosilicate (soryie -6f'l.6'-;m1cron diam) form on the dissolving particles. Upon full dissolutiop of the hydroxide crystals on which i these spherical pari~4,le4*had.forrned the la #er exhibit apertures. Experiments show the presence of,films of Ti compounds on the dissolving bernite and diaspore crystals. During leaching these films crystaLllize Into acicular crystals visibl under an optical microscopie. Photographs of -these formations are shown in e article. (2) Crystallization processes (separation of Al solutions). Without stirring, alumina solutions folr!ln practically only antiskeletal forms cf crystalline growth, so that crystals of hyd;4rgillite grow primarily ~n the form of larnellar dendrites. Lamellar growths f6rm on the plane of the pinacoid. There are virtually no pris- matic growths. Thoroughly stirred alumina solutions, ex~ecially withprimer, give rise to a greater prp~ability of the deformation of growths and, hence, vari 'ous de- fects. Growing dendrites undergo deformations which increase the number-o f .1directions of growth. The dendrites lose their SC structure and assume alairly- iequiaxial form. A. Ekzerteev, Ye. N. Bokova, A. L. Andreyevskiy showed that p6trojem can be destroyed under anaerobic conditions and separation of methane, nitrogen and carbonic acid. As investigations of the gas and Petroldum--.~"- deposits in the Kalinovka, Kuybyshevskaya oblast' (district of Kuybyshev) showed this process takes also place in nature. The problem of the importance of microorganisms in the formation of . ~etrol~&~,. - has, however, hitherto remained a hypothesis. Investigations carried out on the formation of combustible gases furnished more real results* As can be seen from the papers by B, L. Isachenko and M. V. Ivanov, much factual material has been collected on the part of bacteria in Card 1/2 the formation of sulfur deposits. The Essential Results and Tasks of Investigating have been carried out dealing With the geological activity of the group of bacteria Thiobac. ferrooxidans. It was fcund that they occur in pyritic coal, sulfide copper and iron ores and acid drainings from coal and ore pits. N. M. Strakhov denies the mle of iron bacteria in ore formation; the author of the present paper does not quite agree to this. In the course of microscopic investigation of limonites and brown iron-ores A. G. Vologdin found traces of bacterial cells. Finally, the authQr states that hitherto the geological aotivjAty of micro- organisms he's. only been investigated under laboratory conditions whicht howevart certainly vary to a considerable extent from natural conditions.-,~1t is therefore not possible to draw con- clusions without any reservation on the natural processes only based upon laboratory data. Further microbiological investi- gati'ons have to be carried out under natural conditions. It is also necessary to find ways and means which facilitate the control of the geological activity of microorganisms.
