ABSTRACT: Ile measurement of the absorption and velocity of ultrasound passing through
sampLes of polymer powder subjected to different degrees of pressure clarifies many problems
concehing the mechanism of coalescence of materials, their imperfections (such -as poresi
voids$ density variations) and the kinetics of their changes (In size and amount of Imperfection
':during sintering). Kapron, &Iyhexamethyldno oxamide, polyhexamethylene torephualamide,.
'polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene samples.(.5-7 mm thick, 30 mm In diameter for amorphous
and 10 mm In diameter for crystalline polymers) were investigated. During the sintering of

powder to attained over the softening temperature range. For crystalline polymers,. no
complete contact Is obtained before melting. Their sintoring below the melting point to due
.,to the softening of the amorphous part. The annealing of crystalline powdered polymers
rrenders aintering difficult. The curves plotted for the absorption and velocity of
for amorphous polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride samples against molding temperature at
Idifferent frequencies show a sharp break. By increasing the frequency of the ultrasound, the:
beginning of the break is shifted toward higher temperatures and the sharpness of the break'is in.:
creased. The variation In the steepness of the curves Is explained by the correlation bet;veen

of ultrasound was near 23 00 m/seo, at a frequency of 1 Me/seo. for both polyvinyl chloride and
polystyrene. This gives A=2.3nim, andatl0hic/sec. A-0.23mm. Forcrystalline
)polymer such as kapron, no plateau was found in the ultrasonic velocity-molding temperature',

more pronounced In the melting temperature range. The curves and experimental data for
amorphous and crystalline polymers are compared and discussed In detail. Orig, art. hu:1

ABSTRACT: Plasticization of rigid polymers by graft copolymerization with
compatible flexible polymers was investigated. Cellulose triacetnte-polybutyl-
acrylate graft copolymers with different compositions were obtained by acetylatind
previously synthesized cellulose- polybutylacrylate graft copolymers. The latter
were synthesized with the aid of an oxidation-reduction system using Ce+4 salts.
Acetylation was oarried out in homogereous medium in the presence of HCIO

as catalyst. The thermomechanical operties of mechanical mixtures of cellu-
lose triacetate with p ac late which is Incompatible with the former) and
of the graft copolymers were investig, ted. It was impossible to differentiate be-

Plasticization in either system takes place according to a structural mechanism.

and nuclear magnetic resonance methods, It was desired to (

conditions for producing polymers of high thermal stabilityWith improved film
and fiber properties. A powdery specimen ME a v1_.qc_o_sR7y_higher than 1.0 in
uuUuric acid and a 5% moisture content waa used, The experimental conditions
are described, It was found, that the initially amorphous phenylone crystallizes
upon heating. The thermomachaniW ourves plotted at a load of O.B, 61 and

'and 433C. The thermomechanical curve is interpreted on the basis of the data of
differential thermal analysis and of x-ray study. After softeni t 300C the
polymer starts to crystallize. The range of steady def ormatioXyV.,Z at 36-4ooc
corresponds to the crystalline state of phenylone. Heating above 400C causes
decomposition, while malting sets in at 4300. The second moment of the absorption,
e is plotted against temperature for the initial

amorpheas polymer and for a specimen preheated to 360C* The character of the
curves is discussed. It was found that the increase In A H22 of the preheated
specimen over a.4 temperature ranges produces a smaller mobility and better
packing of the 61eculesp indicative of the crystallization process. The
disappearance of the highly elastic state below the melting point of the cryital-

TEM It was found out by investigations that the effect of the elements on
the wear is determined by their effect on graphitization. With increasing
graphitization degree, the hardness of steel decreases and the wear increases.

TITLE: Determining the Density of Rocks and Ores in Out-
croppings and Mining Sites by the Dispersed Gamma-

PERIODICAL: Razvedka i okhrana nedr, 1959, Nr 9, PP 38-40 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The authors propose the application of the method of
dispersed gamma-radiation to determine the density of
rocks or ores on the spot. Experiments made wit-h
samples show largediscrepancies due to changes in
humidity and the rock structures when the samples
were taken. For this purpose, a light KRL gamma-
densitometer was developed by Ye.M. Filiprov and A.G.
Khryapin. It is equipped with an electromechanical
EMS meter which registers up to 100 imp/second. To
increase the sensitivity of the densitometer, the EMS
meter was replaced by a self-discharging halogenous
STS-1 meter. A "Kacha" SG-7 stabilizer was included

current to this meter. As sources of gamma-radiation,
a radium standard Nr 5 (Em - 0.08 mev) and a cobalt
source (Em = 1.25 mev) with a 0.5 micro-curie activity
were used. The volume of the intensity of radiation
I dispersed by the rock is calculated from the formula
I = I P - Infl - (IV - Inf2 )
where Ip is the intensity above the investigated
rock; I - the intensity in the air; I the in-

and the radiation intensity can be calculated from
the formula I - I P - IV. Experimental investigations
were carried out on rocks with densities varying from
0.46 up to 7.8 gr/cu cm. The results received in
units related to the density of the surrounding med-1-11m
are shown (Figure 2). The intensity of dispersed
gamma-radiation in water was taken as a standard for
the curve. It was found that the intensity of dis-
persed gamma-radiation in rocks of low density in-
creases along with the increase of rock density to
a certain maximum point vdiich depends on the initial
energy of gamma-quants. There is 1 graph, 1 table
and 3 Soviet references.

TEXT: Experiments are described on the study of the spectrum of
dispersed y-radiation; these were carried out with the aim of cla-
rifying the possibilities of th Tethod of dispersed T-radiation
(DGR). The isotopes 0060 and OsT3 were usedo A luminescent counter,//
with a crystal of OsI (Ti) and a I)BY-29 (FEU-29) photomultiplier
were employed as an indicator. A 100-6hannel analyzer of the "Radu-
ga" type was used. The source and indicator of the radiation were
placed in a lead shield at a distance of 7 cm from each other. The
depth-potential of the investigation was ascertained in plexiglass,
