6932. A CASE OF NODULAR ARTERITIS TREATED WITH ACTH - Przypadek

A case of nodular arteritis of the Kussmaul-Meyer type is presented. Ina 44-year-
old patient, a syndrome of symptoms characteristic for nodular arteritis was found:
fever, acceleration of the heart's function, anaernia, leucocytosis with easinophilia,
a syndrome of neurological symptoms, diffuse gastric pains and symptoms of Co-
ronary failure. After the application of ACTH to a total amount of 1,300 mg., the
patient ceased to have fever. During the application of ACTH, the arterial tension
increased up to 200/130 mm. Hg. The patient was discharged on his own request
in a state of some improvement, but after 4 weeks returned to the hospital due to
symptoms of pneumonia. In spite of the application of antibiotics the patient died
and at post mortem a diagnosis of nodular arteritis was made. The anatomopatho-
logical examination confirmed the clinical diagnosis. (XVIII,6,9.19)

Abstract: [Authors' English summary] Authors describe
centers of-listeriosis in sheep in areas where the dis-
ease was not previously recorded. They find that histo-
lom,cal examinations are of great diagnostic value, and
that focal, purulent inflammation of the cerebral stem
appears to be a typical pathognomic characteristic of
this disease in sheep. Iliere are 26 references; 4 each
,Soviet and Polish, 3 Western, and 14 German.

ABSTRACT: Proton spin-lattice relaxation time Ti in liquid If2S anti in a H2S-D2S
mixture containing volume faction 0.472 of HZS were measured within the range of
temperature from the melting point to tile critical point and in the saturated vapar
phase from 35C to 104C. In both, liquid Ti increases at low temperatures and de-
creasF~s at temporatures above zero C. The predominating role of dipolar relaxation
in the liquid at low temperatures is demonstrated. In the saturated vapor phase the
ratio of T1 to density is found to be proportional to T-'12. 'Pile authors wish to

The extracellular spice was determined with the thiosulphate method according to
Cardozzo and Edelman in 15 cases of rheumatic fever and in 20 cases of rheuma-
toid arthritis (among them 6 cases complicated with renal amyloidostu); also the
Na. K and Cl concentrations in the blood serum were auseused. In the cases of
acute rheumatic fever with a severe course, the extracellular space showed in-
creased values. The connection of these results with clinical observations suggests
that the water metabolism disorders take place in the cells, and the changes in the
extracellular space have only a secondary significance. In half of the cases of
rheumatoid arthritis, which are characterized by a great emaciation of the organ-
issin, a significant enlargement of the extracellular system was observed. A theory
is expressed that this phenomenon is a consequence of the advancing atrophy of
the tissular (cellular) mass in rheumatoid arthritis. Measurements of electro-
lyte concentrations it% rheumatic fever and in rheumatoid arthritis did not show
nny significant deviations from nortnal values.
