*176 cases are analysed. Prevalence of the polyntoclear pleoc)losis found at the first
examination of the CSF does not exclude the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis,
provided other data speak for this diagnosis. Polynuclear pleocytosis was found in
cases in which autopsy revealed extensive necrotic foci. either in the cerebrum
or in the medulla and brain stem; this was explained as a necrotoxic reaction. The
appearance of polynuclear pleocytosis in cases with tuberculomas of the cerebrum
could be explained by the penetration into the CSF of minimal amounts or tuber-
culln (according to the opinionsof western authors), or of necrotic material (ac-
i cording to Opalski). The relation of the polynuclear pleocytosis tovarious causal
factors Is explained by a variability in the biological (enzymatic) function of the

TITLE: The use of various activated carbon preparation in
oxygen and chlorine electrodes

TEXT: The combination of gaseous with powder electrodes was inves-
tigated to throw some light on the properties of fuel cells. A
previous study of the chlorine electrode in conjunction with pow-
dered carbon and pt electrodes showed that the established poten-
tial of a powder electrode in the system C1 2 - 01- - H20 was al-
ways lower than that of an ordinary chlorine eleztrode~ Similar re-
sults were obtained by western authors. In general, C12 and 02
which form anions in the electrode reaction give a negative devia-
tion on a powder electrode, while a positive devia-Vion was obtai-
ned with cation forming hydrogen (unpublished work). These phenc-

a Pt wire. Another electrode, bonsisting of a Pt wire and a calo.,
mel electrode were also included. Using a Ridan poten~'-_Jometer, the
potential of the oxygen electrode was measured against a saturated
calomel electrode. Potentials of the powder, electrodes which stabi-
lized after 3-6 dyas, were 0.41-18 - 0.471 v,, lower (on -the hydrogen
scale) than the potential. of the reversible electrode in -che case
of the activated carbons and 0.252 v lower in the case of graphite.
Behavior of the 5 carbon preparations was thought xo be essential
non-distinctive. The system powdered 6 - chlorine elecr.:rode was
studied in the same mannerv in a Hoppler thermosla-,~ a~ 25of '' �
0.10C. The potentials stabilized over 3-4 days. Greater varlal-.Zons
in the powder behavior were found in this case: the lowering was
only 0.028V for graphite and Oo296-0-463-~r for the activated car-
bons. It is thought that the potentials measured Co.-respond to sta-
tionary not equilibrium, states. In the case of -the ~!hlorine el.ec-
trode, the deviations tend to decrease with increased particle
size of the carbons and to increase for the unleaf--hee-, 1)owders. No
effect of the surface area of the powders on the pote.n'--ia.1 was ob-

Abstract : Experiments on the effectiv4atrasonies on microorganisms
have shown that this actionlis not limited only to destructive
effects, but also causes intracellular changes., conneeted with
the physiology and morphology of the microorganisms. i'm in-
vestigation was made of the effects of ultrasonics on strepto-
myces grisens spores for the production of stroptccWcin. Me
action was realized in an equeous medium with variation in the
irradiation parameters,, after which the spores were grown on
a solid medium, parallel with the unsoundea microorganisms.
The time of irradiation was 5. 60, 300, 480 and 600 see.
