T The author considers the possibility of using the
method of sections for solving two-dimensional problems of the theory
of elasticity. Une can start with the solution for a plane loaded
by a concentrated force at an arbitrary-point (Love's problem) or by
the solution for a half-plane loaded at an arbitrary point of* its
edge by an inclined concentrated force (1.71amant - 2oussinesq problem).
Different methods of solution can be very complicated in individual
cases and the use of electronic computers is therefore recorwended.
The author proposes the follo~Ang formulation of the problem; a disc
of an arbitrary outline, with arbitrary load, is considered as a

TEXT: A special feature of the machine patented is that it
is cooled by compressed helium or simil'ar gas flowing in hollow
cdnductors forming the windinga. The machine operateo in a
vacuum chamber made of material of low thermal coriductivitv. The
bearings do not require lubrication at low temperatures. The
magnetic circuit of the machine is made of an alloy of zinc and
zirconium. The active conductors are made of an alloy of
molybdenum or hafnium. The electrical reliability of the machine
is high, it is of relatively simple construction, small size and
weight per unit output. The machines patented may be used as
generators, or motors of high output at high voltage in long-
distance d.c. power transmission.

(80-87) Graphs 3 Tables 2
In 26 psychotics and 6 dogs observations were made on the blood lactic acid level
in the following situations: (1) before ECT and in various Intervals after It; (2) si.
milarly before and after a situation up to details equal to that of ECT b,)t without
letting electric current be passed through the head. The foltowing conclusions are
made: Blood lactic acid level after ECT equals that during hard physical labour.
The course of changes is biphasic. Once ECT is repeated, conditioned elevations
of pre-ECT level are observed. Chanjes after -a pretended ECT-situation are ii.
milar to those after ECT, supposing the person or animal got a real ECT at le"'
once before, An extinction of these conditioned hurnoral changes was observed vhftl
repeating the pretended ECT-situation after 20 days. gkoda - PestrA

Bratislava. *Prfspevok k otdzke podmienenych reflexov na inzulrn. Contri-
bution to the question of conditioned reflexes to insulin
BRATISLAVSKt LEKARS..LISTY 1956, 3613 (160-168) Graphs 7
In 27 mental patients treated with insulin shocks, blood sugar curves were stu-
died under various conditions. After repetition of shocks, subthreshold insulin
doses were found to provoke shocks accompanied by marked hypoglyeaemin. In
such corditions, even after sham injection of saline. hypoglycaemin of the same
value as that during normal insulin shock was found, although tio shock occurred.
That is explained as a conditioned reflex phenomenon. Such 'conditioned hypogly-
caemic curves' may be of complicated shape (initial hyperglyeaemia or double de-
pression of blood sugar level). Repeated treatment with reduced insulin doses,
however. brought about extinction of the conditioned reaction. Holubar - Prague

acute psychoses was elevated; in depressive

Blood serum protein fractions from patients with various mental disorders were
compared by means of paper electrophoresis with those of normal individuals. The
comparison revealed sXatistically significant differences between albumen and the
at and -(-globulin fractions. A significant increase was noted In P-fraction (the
carrier or specific antibodies) in paranoid schizophrenia, manic-depressive states,
amentia and puerperal psychoses. Fraction aa-was increased significantly in

ABSTRACT: Review of the cases of 42 psychiatric patients who were hospitalized

likelihood of more than coincidental relationship between stresses related direct3,v
