ABSTRACT: It is experimentally est blished that aprface ripples in the bearing races
of rings are caused during grindinAy vibrations'Wh the machine-tool-workpiece system.:
Reduction of vibrations in this system requires preliminary aligratent and adjustment ot
all units and mechanisms and balancing of rotating masses. 'Jt is. shown that the vibra-,
tion level in the spindlez~unit of the abrasive wheel on thJLZ-8 1krinder is consider-
ably higher than for the,'LZ-26 machine due to the more construction
of -the abrasive wheel unit in7the 12-26 machine. Surface ripple on tie of inn~!r
rings Increases with transverse feed of the wheel. The experimental work was usr"03 an
a basis for developing factory standards on permissible vll)rntions of machine tool sys-

Abstract According to experiments by the Kazan branch of the Acade-
my of Sciences, USSR, when wheat and pea sooda were mois-
tened vith octamethyl (0-5-1%) prior -to soving, the hiCtest
content of octamethyl 01-36 ra/kg) In the plants was 26-
29 days after the soving; in 40 days It decreased to 5-11
ml/kg, but was still toxic for the imsects; however, the
content of octamethyl in 60 days fell to 3-4 mg/kg, and
the swedish fly and aphids began to populate the plants.

TITLE: Anisotropy of thin ferromagnetic films
PERIODICAL: Akademiya nauk SSSR. Izvestiya. Seriya fizicheskaya, v. :-6,
no. 2, 1962, 314 - 317
TEXT: This paper was presented at a conference on magnetiam and antiferro-
magnetism. The authors studied the relationship between the aniSotropY of
ferromagnetic films and their structural defects and inhomoLreneities,
Pure Fe, Hi and permalloy (79% Vi, 17% 4% Mo) ware vacuum evaporated
on to polished optical glass disks (1-11PS'5
0- mm Hg). In some cases the
base was rotated to prevent, or cause the uniform distribution of etruc-
tural defects. Anisotrppy was determined from the mechanical momonta V/1
acting on the film in a-rotating uniform magnetic field (4000 oa). The
sensitivity of the anisometer was 1.103 erg cm-3 per mm of settle. UaF-netic
anisotropy was found to be dependent on the condition3 unier which the
film was produced. Maximum anisotropy is-observed with directed incilence

TITLE: Gamma radiation field in the lowest layer of the atmosphere due to surface
radioactive contamination of an area
SOURCE: AN SSSR. Izv. Seriya geofizicheskaya, no. 7, 1964. 1103-1113
TOPIC TAGS: gamma radiation, radioactive contamination, atmospheric surface layer.
radloactivo isotope, fallout, surface contamination
'ABSTRACT: At present, the literaWre contains only fragmentary d-ata on computations of
gamma fields from surface sources and virtually no data on the Influence of natural Con-
ditions on the gamma field resulting from surface contamination of an area. The author
therefore computed the intensity of the dose of gamma radiation in the lowest layer of the
atmosphere over an area contaminated by radioactive Isotopes, assuming -that the con-
tamination is at the surface. It is shown that up to heights of 200 m the character of the
relationship between the intensity of the dose and the density of surface cantamination With
radioactive isotopes is slightly dependent on the energy of the primary gamma radiation ,
On the basis of computationB and model experiments, an estimate Is made of the influence

surface, the vegetatim cover and meteorological conditions) on the ganinwa. r la on field
due to surface contariffiation. The results are graphed and the following conclusions are
drawn: 1. The character of the relationship between the intensity of the, dose P(h) and the
surface density of contamination e' of an area, derived for a plane Isotropic source when
h,~ 200 m, and especially In the range of heights 100-150 m, Is slightly dependent on the
energy of primary gamma radiation. 2. An underlying surface without ft vegetation cover
has virtually no influence on the relationship of P(h) to o, when h > 10- 15 rn. The micro-
relief of the underlying surface decreases the intensity of the dose at a height of 1 ni by a
factor of 1. 25 in an uncultivated level area and by a factor of 1. 6 In a cultivated area, the
'intensity of unscattered gamma radiation.is reduced by factors of 1.4 and 2.2, respectively
(for E = 1 Mev). 3. A vegetation cover screens the gamma radiation from surface con-
tarnination. Young and mature forests of various classes can decrease the Intensity of the
'dose by a factor of 1. 3-2. 5, accompanied by a decrease in the Intensity of unscattered
gamma radiation by a factor of 2.6-4. 4. The change in atmospherIc density and air
moisture content with height up to h - 200 ni exerta virtually no influonce on the form of
the relationship of P(h) to xee.- Temperature and pressure changes atre moro effective: for
example, a change in temperature from -30 to +30C changes the scaling factor K100(1) (for
dome intensltV) by 20% (for Z I Mov), Orls. art. haa 25 formula*, s eiguree am

ABSTRACT: The measurements of gairma radiations above tbe earth surfstea
contaminated by Co-60 isotopes are described. For -slmul' iatln~', rn,dAo-
active fallouts, one hundred of Co-60 sources of 96 Mg Ila- equivalent
units were used. Ench sourcs wns placed in thn coutro, of a 40 x .10 ti
square at a height of 10-15 cm over the ground. The sui' -face density
was about 3.8xlo-2 mcurie/sq m (3*5 .10-2-Mmv/sq cm see),, The dosin rats
at one-metar level was 1.75 mr/hr while at the altitude of 200 x thils
rate was about '0.12 mr/hr. The radiation spoctrum vine mansured from a
helicopter flying at 20-200 m with a speed of 50-60 km/fir. The monsure
mont time was 30 see for three crossing flights. A. 100 x 100 mm Nal(I'l
arystal was used for the spectrometer arranged on the busis of A1-100

At all the concentrations studied, the specific conductance ~ a' ALP and D-JD?
solutions changed linearly with temperature (between 25 and 700C). Because of the
lower mobility of D+ ions as compared to H+, the conductance of saturated D-A.D?
solutions is much less than that of ADF solutions. Using the relationships estab-
lished in the study, the authors grow homogeneous single crystals of ADP and D-Z, ?
for research purposes. The authors thank A. V. Shubnikov for discussing the reSUlt3
and Ya. 1. Ryskin for analyzing the IR spectra and determining the degree of dauter-
ation of D-ADP crystals. Orig. art. has: 5 figures and 3 t4tblos.
