ABSTRACT: Seventy-five Spirialis specimens have been discovered in
dark-grey foliated carbonate argi1lites of the Polyanitsa
series (upper Oligocene) at the village 5truten'-Vyzhniy
on the Chechva river. All the Spirialis are represen-~~d
by young specimens, the shells of which have one to one-
and-half spiral turns. The diameter of the largest spi-
rialis equals 0.16 mm. The only find of a small spirialis
in the Forecarpathians thus far was made by 11.11, Subbotina
at the village Stebnik on the Vorotyshcha river in 1954.
The new find of Spirialis is of interest because they
were discovered considerably below in sediments in which
mollusk fauna has not beer. encountered thus fare Together
with Spirialis there were also plankton foramirifera from
the family of Glabigerinidae. On the basis of this find,
a hypothesis can be advanced that the large-scale pe:rish
Card 112 of young Spirialis occurred probably as a result of an

A Spirialis Find in the Polyanitsa, Series of the Carpathians
increasing salinity of the basin w1iich existed they, on this
area. There are 4 photos and 1 Soviet refererce.

Dressing Mill (Ispytaniye gidrotsiklonov i turbotsiklonov na
Balkhashskoy obogatitellnoy fabrike)

ABSTRACT: Tests were run of simple conical three-product cyclones,
cylindrical hydrocyclones (H), and turbocyclones with top,
side, and bottorn discharge of the dust. The tests were run
with 2 types of feed: Feed from a control classifier providing
46-487o 74-micron undersize and 35-397o solids, and crude
concentrate after grinding in the mill, with 65-75% 74-micron
undersize and 35-3976 solids. The tests show that turbocyc-
lones do not yield any better classification results than 1-1. The
best indices both as to Output and quality of classification are
obtained with conical and three-product H. A table of mean

The purpose of the experiments described in this article -iras to determine
the effect of water vapor and sulfur dioxide on the prDCeSS of high-
temperature oxidation of nickel and nickel-steel. Nickel and nickel-
steel samples were placed in a furnace and exposed to &7 air, humid
air, 100 percent water vapor, and mixtures of humid air and sulfur
dioxide at temperatures ranging from 750*to 980"C.for 40 to 10-10 hours,
The scale formed under these conditions was studied and It wais con-
cluded that a 10-15 percent increase in water vapor in the cm4je of the
first two oxidizing media resulted in an appreciable iucrewie in the
rate of oxidation of a given steel. On the other hand, 1-5 percent
addition of sulfur dioxide to the moist air at temperatures ranging froin
750-800*C.d.id not have any appreciable effett on the rate of scale for-
mation on nickel and 25 percent nickel-steel s=ples. ExaVEnation of the
scale shoved that Its structure and the aequence of outer layers are
similar to that of the scale formed on iron under analogous oxidation

Composition and Structure of Scale on Iron-Wickel Alloys 59
The authors describe the phase and chemical composition of scale on
binary Armco iron-electrolytic nickel alloys containing 10, 15, 25,
40P 50, 70, 80 and 90 percent nickel. Dry air was uaind as the primary
oxidizing gas medium although carbon dioxide was also used In a few
instances, Exposure lasted from 40 to 100-120 brs. The temperature
varied.from 800"- 1000*C. MicrogrEiphic, chemical and X-rajr analyses
were employed. It is shown that in case of 10, 15 and 25 percent
alloys selective oxidation of iron takes place. Me iiasle on 10 and
15 percent alloys is characterized by a relatively thIn FeO layer.
In the case of 25 percent alloy the hcmogeneous FeO Inyer disappears.
Nickel concentrates in unoxidized form in separate grains af the
alloy, forming thereby a heterogeneous portion of the scale, In
alloys containing from 40 to 90 percent nickel, both ocuponents
react in the process of scale formation. The NIO content Increases
with the Increases of the nickel content of the alloy, There are

Some experimental data are presented on the kinetics of oxidation of 99.47
percent Armco iron at an elevated temperature in aIr containinigg
various admixtures of water vapor and sulfur dioxide. A die4;rnm and
a description of the apparatus used in these experiments to produce
the desired mixtures of water vapor, air and sulfur dioxide are given.
A micrographic examination of the scale was made. It ims shown that
azi increase of vater vapor from 0 to 4 percent imreasas appreciably
the rate of scale formation and thickness of the vastite layer. A
further increase of vater-vapor content has no practical efftavct on the
rate of scale formation. An increase of sulfur dioxide content from
0 to 4.4 percent in air containing more than 4 percent of watex vapor
at 720'C,has no marked effect on the rate*of scale formation nor on the

the relative rate of diffusion of iron and oxygen durizig an oyidation
process occurring in samples of Armco iron, vdstite arv.1 magnetitet
covered with a film of various inert elements., i. e,, nickel, copper.,
silver and gold. It was shown that 1) the vL'i'stite layer of the scale
in humid and in dry air develops principally becouse of the diffusion
of iron; 2) 78 percent of the magaetite layer of the seale Is formed
because of the diffusion of oxygen and only 22 percent of it because
of the diffusion of iron; 3) the hematite layer of the scale grows
almost exclusively due to the diffusion of oxygen. There are 10

Lomonosov. A general chart',of the sound:velocities in the water was
cbmpiled,and the depth and.location of tI)e sound channel was deter-
mined. In the North Atlantic there are pronounced velocity gradiemts
to a depth of 1000-1500 m in the south and 400-600"m in the north
which wedge-out at the s6rfa-ce near the polar front. -The sound chan-
ne-1 (and its axis) is clearly distinguishable in the spring and in the

channel is determined by the low temperature and low salinity of the

TRANSLATION: The general picture of the distribution of the speed of sounds the
character of the disposition of the boundaries of the sound channel and the depth
of its axis in the great expanse of the Northern Atlantic is given. Using Kavak-
har's temperature and salinity tables for standard horizons the velocities of sound
at the corresponding horizons are calculated. Vertical pz*filepi were plotted accord-
ing to these values and on them isolines of the velocity were superimposed, and the
sound channel, its axis and boundaries determined. An analysis oV five profiles,
three of which ran from southeast to northwest, and two intersecting them running

-from southwest to northeast, leads to the following conclusions. In the region
being studied, the distribution of velocities along the ver-tical is characterized
in the upper layer (to depths of 1000-1500 m in the southern part and 400-600 m in
.the northern part) by a large velocity gradient and a tapering-out at the surface,
especially near the polar front. The isolines are wave-like in form, a fact deter-
mined by the irregular distribution of temperature and salinity along the entire
,stretch of the North Atlantic. In the dee water layer the'velocity isolineB lie hor-
.izontally. In the surface layer (50_100 M3, in autumn the velocities increase by
.5-8 m/sec. in comparison with those in the spring. The sound channel's axis is
;,ra~e-like and lies deep, having a general tendency to rise from a depth of 1500-
00 m in the southeast up to 300-500 m in the northwest. Such a picture is dater-

mined by the hydrological regime of the water masses of this region: subarctic
-waters with enhanced temperature and salinity are responsible for the comparitively
shallow depth of the axis in the northwest (300-500 m) with a i3herp dip in the
polar front region. The waters of the North Atlantic current cause the axis to lie
at a great depth in the southeastern part of the North Atlantic. The velocity along
the axis of the sound channel (from 1495-1475 m/sec.) and the thickness of the sound
channel (from 1500 to 400-500 M) change in this same direction. The axis of the
channel lies near the boundaries of two principal water mnases: the surface mass
with a thickness up to 1200-m in the southeastern part and 6oo-8oo-m in the

northwestern part, and also the deep mass stretching along the bottom. Seasonal
changes have no effect on the location of the sound channel, the axis retaining
its location and form. Seasonal fluctuations of temperstunD and solinity in the
near-surface layers cause the upper boindaries of the sound channel to draw near
