Aloft' i gaz, no. 10, 1965, 30 TOPIC TAGS: po2,vvinyl chloride,, corrosion protectiong aluminumq electric potentia2l cathode polarization V /,IJSU/-,l r1W a ln4reAnn 4-.7 (109 S r0JGZ 0 St OAJ ABSTRACT: In order to determine the limits of protective potentials in the cathodic polarization of aluminum shells (brand A2) insulated with a polyvirql chloridel~(PVC) filmj studies were made in natural saline soil with an 86% salt content tO.46~6 U-j, 0.0048% C -, 0.036% HCO~-, 0.03% Ca+~+, 0.2% 0.13% Na). The experiment was carried oaYby using a p6tentiostatic cathodic polarization circuit. The range of potentials was -0.69 -0.68p -0.8, -o.9, -0.98, -1.1 V. Every day for 30 days, the current leakage was measured, and the constancy of -the potentials was checked. At the and of the experiment the volume resistivity of the PVC film dropped by 3 to 4 order or magnitude (from 1013 to 109 ohm cm). When the insulatioulras Aripped off the shellss corrosion spots %ith a coating of corrosion products were noted on samples which had been at potenttals of -0.98 and -i.1 V; the other insulated aluminum sample ACC NRs AP6010661 had retained a completely clean surface, despite a current leakage up to 450 AA. 7hus., it was shown that (1) the potential range in the cathodic protection of under- ground aluminum equipment insulated with YX films had expanded, extending from -o.6 to -0.9 V,, and (2) the decrease of the volume resistivity. of the PVC film in cathodic polarization does riot characte.~*ize- the state 'of the aluminum surface under .the insulation.
