The solubility of lanthanum hydroxide does not increase with rising NaOH concen-
t'ation. The solubility isotherm of gadolinimn hydroxide rises only slightly with
ZOH concentration; tht solubility curve has no maximum. In the case of ytterbium
hydroxides the solubility isotherm has a distinct maximum at an NaOH concentration
of approximately 14.1 N; the solubility at this maximum amounts to 4 g of hydroxide
per liter of solution, i.e., 2 x 10-2 mole/I. The solid phase up to the maximum is

Abstract In patients with cyrrhosis (0) of the liver - with compon-

and qualitative impairments were found of the red blood

'Illese cases were observed in ~he last 5 yr. The incidence coma is practically
the same in cases of portal cirrhosis and epidemic hepatitis. The most frequent
precipitating factors are haemorrhages, Infections, massive evacuation para-

centesis and treatment with mercurial diuretics. The syndrome was dominated
oy neuro-psyc~c distvrbanoes. Frequent findingf- were jaundice (74%). haentu-
rrhage (59%) and factor hepaticus (32%). Laboratory tesis seldom gave conclusLve
results; the dysproleinaemia tests were usually positive. The main aim of treat-
ment was to restore the electrolyte balance. The duration of the coma ranged

TITLE; Electrodeposition of nickel. Results of laborat.ory-.
tests-and experience gained in electrodeposition of
nickel from NiSO4 solution

TEXT: The inter-relationships are summarized between the
different factors Involved in the electrodeposition of nickel
using insoluble anodes. The most favourable conditions are:
electrolyte temperature = 70 to 80OC; pil = 1.8 ; inter-electrode
distance = 7 cm;, curent density = 4 A/dm?. In earlier work,
Engineer V. Kosta'l.found that lead contamination could be reduced
by substituting magnetite anodes for the 99% Pb, 1% AS anodes used
at present. Since this material is relatively expensive and no
experience has been obtained of its use, it was decided to use a
diaphragm in the cell. With an electrolyte containing 7.5 mg of
I.Pb per litre, the electrodeposited nickel contained 0.006 to
0.008% Pb, and if the lead content of the electrolyte was less
than 3 mg per 11tre the deposited nickel contained 0.001% Pb.
If the electrolysis Is carried out in separate compartments, the

electrolyte utilization rate is much higher, i.e. ten times as
high as in the case of electrolysis with a diaphragm. Higher
nickel deposition rates bring about an increase in the H2SO4 content
of the anolyte up to 60 g H2SO4/litre and this has a favourable
influence, as the.dissociation of PbSO4 is preventedwith the resvlt
that the anolyte is less'contaminatod with Pb2+ ions. Laboratory
equipment was built using a glass tank of,120 x 190 x 120 nim,
heated indirectly by immevaInt the tank in a water bath.
-:1 mm thick aluminium sheet was used as the cathode and two
1 rmn thick Pb + 1% Ag anodes were used. ' The anodes and the
cathodes were 100 x 100-mm and the interelectrode spacing was
6o mm. The electrolyte contained: ONi - 9o.69 g/l, Co - 14.24mgA,
Fe - trace, Cu - 0.64 mg/l.,,,,Zn - 7.0 mg/1,- Pb - 0.2 mg/l,

.The optimum electrolyte flow rate using-a diaphragm was studied
undor the above-mentioned conditions with a C:A ratio of 1:1
varying tho flow rate between 130 and 116o ml/hour. The most
favcurable conditions were: 15.5 to 23-35 S of nickel per litre',
.corresponding to a rate of electrolyte flow of 350 to 500 mi/hour.. i/
Under, these conditIon,3 the current efficiency was 93 to 95%-
A. furt,-er increase efficiency by about 11,96 could be achieved by
increasi,~g the temperature of the electrolite to 70 to 80*C.
