L (14707-t/ I%:-- -AP6028010- ACC NR the surface of the Moon is 20-30 11 r/h. 2. ' About 9016 of the Y-rays emitted by the surface of the Moon is produced during interaction of cosmic rays with lunar substance (prompt -t-rays and decays of cosmogenic isotopes). 3. The basic rock-forming elements of the lunar surface are believed to be 0, Mg, Al, and Si. 4. No difference was noted in intensity of y -rays emitted by different re- gions of the lunar surface Including the seas and tile continents (variation of intensity did not exceed 4056). 5. The decay of K, Th, and U in lunar rocks does not contribute more than 10% to the total -Y-ray emission of the lunar surface. 6. Comparison of the intensity of -y-radiation from the decay of natural radioactive elements K, Th, and U with the results obtained by a calibrated instrument from terrestrial rocks.shows that the concentration of radioactive, elements in lunar rocks Is close to that of basic terrestrial rocks and differs greatly from acidic rocks. However, it can not be positively stated that the lunar surface contains no ultrabasic (meteoritic) substance. At the present time an attempt is being made to determine the relative content of 0, Mg, Al, and Si in lunar rocks from the available Y-ray spectra produced in interac- tions with cosmic rays. ABSTRACT: This source was developed so that it could be used in the construction of a re-charging electrostatic generator of the type described by Alvarez (Ref-1). The most effective means of re-charging positive ions is to pass them through matter. Thin foils become too hot, gases cause difficulties with the vacuum system; the best suggestion is that due to Fogel'Olef.2) in which mercury vapour is used. Fig. I shows an apparqtus made for investigating topics connected with focussing ion- beams in the presence of mercury vapour, finding the optimum thickness of the "target", finding the maximum coefficient of re-charging protons into negative ions and its dependence on proton energy. The source of ions (1) 1 is focussed by a three-element lens (2). The beam passes through a tube (3) 25 mm long and 8 mm dia. into the chamber containing the super- sonic jet (4). This chamber is 100 mm, long and is cooled by a copper rod dipping into a Dewar flask containing liquid 0 Uardl/3 nitrogen. The chamber temperature may be taken down to -160 C analyser results shows tnat ions z:u,e ueAu6 j.L%juu~,c%A -.1 H+ and H+ ions. Although this coefficient is twice that for conversion from H+ the yield of the latter is 60-70% in 1 the first version of the ion source design and its use has been adhered to. The optimum proton energy for re-charging is 10 to 12 kV. Fig. 5a shows a Coneral view of the first version of the ion-source based on the information derived from the apparatus described above. The jet c4amber nor, has a double wall to reduce heat flow into the vapour space. The target is very stable; in the cotirse of 8-10 hours -cont-Inuous running, no adjustments were required. The consumption of nitrogen is 0-7 - 0.8 litres/hour. When the beajn emerges through a 6 mm dia. hole the HI current is 12 to 14 pA and through a 2 = dia. hole, 8 to 9 )A. In the absence of the target, the Ht current is 300 to 360 JiA in the first case and 100 to 120 uA in the second. In the "experimental's version of the jet, the critical dia. was 4 mm, the output dia., 10.8 Mr.$ the separation between them being 46 There are 5 figureil and 8 references, 2 of which are Slavic. Wave propagation and wave excitation by outside currents in a magnetoactive plasma are studied on the basis of the kinetic th ory. Studies are made of fluctuations of various physical values characterizing t;?e condition of magnetoactive plasma, processes of wave scattering, and reciproci t nsformations of waves on fluctuations in magnetoactive plasma. Magnetohydro- d7namic equations are used to determine the spectral function and some space and correlative functions for the fluctuation of velocity, magnetic field, temperature, 1/2 L 05792-67 ACC NR' AT6031466 12 and other values. The differential cross sections of scattering and transformation of a1fven and magnetoacoustic waves are determined on the basis of the above correlative functions, In conclusion, the author expresses his sincere gratitude to Professor-A. G. Sitenko for guidance and help in the work. He expresses deep gratitude to Academicians A. 1. Akhivezer and J. A. Akhtl2ler for useful dis- cussions on the subject of the dissertation. AN SSSR~ 1955, vYp. 11, 124-133 Abstract The electric and optical properties of thin layers of dou- ble alloys Ng-Di, Mg-Sb, and Mg-Sn, obtained by the varia- ble-composition (Vekshinskiy) method, were investigated along with their interaction with air. It is observed that in variable-compositkin specimens there is a narrow range with anomalous properties (a jump in the specific electric resistivity, and an increase transparency), which lies between the portions t1at consist of the pure compo- nents. When exposed to air, the transparency and the elec- tric reaistivity of the anomalous portions increase. The Card 1/2 USSR/Transformation in Solid Bodies. E-6 Abs Jour Referat Zhur - Fizika, No 5, 1957, 11749 The interaction with air takes place most energetical.ly for specimens of the Mg-Sb system and least energetically for the Mg-Bi system. In films of pure metals, no such phenomena are observed. It is concluded that the portions with the anomalous properties correspond to compounds M93Sb2) MgqBi , and Mg2Sn, which are unstable in air and in the forg oi compact specimens. The air partially or fully decomposes these compounds with formation of MgO or Mg (OH)21 which is accompanied by a sharp increase in the electric resistivity and transparency. Recently, the ,phenomenon has boon noticed an a sample found in the oxidation zone of a bad .at Bzrdtzeto in the Malko Tirnovo, district and now at the Museum of the Department of Mineralogy of the Sofia University. It is a crystal of virgin copper exhibiting a very interesting morphology convored by cuprita crystals with cubic faces showing spiral layers. The paper presents micrographic and .phauo-contraut microscope pictures of the sample and interfarograma of the spiral. A detailed arystallographio description of the minaral is also given.
