Abstract : A brief review of the history, epidemiology, and diagnosis of epidemic
hepatitis both in the Soviet Union and abroad is given. A new method
of culturing the virus of epidemic hepatitis, a hemoculture method
employing Sarcina as "feeders", is described in detail. The names of
Soviet scientists working in this field and the nature of their work
are mentioned. Eleven Soviet references and eleven non-Soviet refer-
ences are cited.

Abst A survey of data obtained by Soviet and foreign resear-
chers in experimental studies of virus hepatitis. In
the author's opinion, attempts by Soviet and foreign
scientists to cultivate the virus in monkeys should be
considered promising. Data on the appearance of micro-
organism "SB" in the blood and fecies of heDatitis pa-
tients are significant. Also important are a number of
specific and non-specific methods proposed for the labo-
ratory diagnosis of Botkin's disease. A discussion is
given of basic measures in combatting Botkin's disease.

The discovery in 1942 of the acute - encephalomyelitis virus and the comparison of
its characteristics with those of other neurotropic virus provided an opportunity of
establishing a close link between that of rabies and those of encepha-lomyclitis of
foxes and horses and of disseminated sclerosis, the latter pointing the way to speci-
fic diagnosis and treatment. The vaccine prepared from the virus of acute encepha-
lomyelitis and destroyed by formalin was used during 10 yr. in the treatment of
disseminated sclerosis. The treatment consisted of 2-3 courses of 10-12 s.c. In-
jections of the vaccine (3-5 ml.) during one year and led in 307. of cases to recovery
or considerable improvement. The s.c. injections of vaccine were, however, badly
tolerated by the patients and the intracutaneous method of injection was proposed
(0.2 ml. in the skin of the forearm)- this gave a specific skin reaction which was
used as 'a diagnostic. It was reve~fed that in acute encephalomyelitis and disse-
minated sclerosis a positive reaction was obtained in 9676 of the cases. In other
disease of the nervous system the reactions were doubtful in 2016 and positive only
in 1.576. This permits the use of this method in the clinic, especially since the
serological methods of investigation gave positive reau.1ts in only 304076 of the

AB31RACT: In recent years P.S. Andonov, A.K. Shubladze, Ye.N. Levkovich and G.D.
Zasukhina have shown that viral tissue cultures can be effectively
prepared, which has prepared the way for an improvement in vaccine
against spring-summer tick borne encephalitis. The present article
lists the results of experiments which prove the efficacy of vaccine
prepared from virus cultured on chick embryo fibroblasts. The virus
was cultured on skin-muscle tissue from the embryo and an effective
method of inactivating the virus with formalin was developed. The
vaccine was tested for Immurogenicity on mice, inducing an immunity
ranging from 100 to 100,000 Units. The virus-neutralizing antibodies
in tfte serum reached titers of 1,000 and morej The vaccine was also
tested on human volunteers and proved to be quite non-reactive. Triple

Abstract [English su=aary modified]: Authors' unpublished data as well
as Bulgarian, other Soviet, Czech, Japanese uncited publications are
reviewed in support of authors' contention that Infectious hepatitis
can be caused by several different viruses each having their own
specific properties and only vaguely related, as to ECHO, Coxsackie
and other entero- and adenoviruses, canine hepatitis virus. Human
cells (renal, endothelial vascular, Intestinal, Detroit-6) are best
media. In some instances, disease undistinguishable from infectious
hepatitis appears to have been produced by known viruses.

ABSTRACT: In the light of the tasks which await Soviet agri-
culture in the 1959-1965 plan, it is of utmost
importance to fully utilize all the irrigated
areas and considerably increase their productivity.
One of the most important problems is to improve
irrigation methods. The authors state that, from
1945 to 1957, irrigable areas have increased by
2,483,000 hectares, but the acreage actually under
irrigation increased by Only 1,405,000 hectares.
In 1957, 3,870,000 hectares of meliorated areas

age of water, poor organization and short e of

labor, bad soil conditions, (swampy, salty

did not require irrigation. The authors state that
the present, manual method of irrigation causes
huge losses of water in filtration, evaporation and
so on. They estimate that up to 25,000,000,000
cubic m of water (costing about 1,000,000,000 rub-
les) are lost every year. They recommend a general
introduction of the sprinkling method, already
widely used abroad. In the US, about 1,000,000
hectares are irrigated this way and only 48,000
hectares in the USSR. This method has many advant-,
ages over the old method: a higher labor efficien-
cy, better quality of irrigation, etc. The authors
enumerate different sprinkling machines in use ab-
road and in the USSR. Different examples of im-
proved harvesting methods and their cost are pre-

ABSTRACT: The applicatLon of spectral analysis for the determination
of the composition of coal ashes using the experimental method
developed for the quantitative analysis of clays (Ref.3) was
tried. The method was tested for the analysis of coal ashes
containing- SiO2 ir, the range 3-55%; 'Al203 10-47/o; Fe,,O3
4-62%; CaO 0.4-20.00% and hTgO 0-05-1-50/6. The possibility of
a more accurate and rapid analysis of coal ash for iron and
aluminium oxides by the spectral method than by chemical in-ethods
was established. Mean deviations in the content of the indi-
vidual ash components determined by spectral analysis from the
data obtained by chemical analysis were within the limits of
errors permissible for spectral analysis (1-1076). The absence
of interference during the analysis of one element with another

AN SSSR and other institutes carried out experiments for
producing inhibitors which either slow down or prevent
oxidation and auto-ignition of coal during stock-piling.
Tests on inhibitors - antipyrogens, were carried out by
Skochinskiy, Makarov, Veselovskly, Terpogosovat
'Orleanskaya (IGD AN SSSR), Ivakin (VNIIT), Ladut'ko et
al. (VNIITP). The IGI AN 883R carried out experiments
on mechanical inhibitors under laboratory conditions,
and on chemical inhibitors during laboratory as well
as experimental stock-piling. A number of chemical compo-
sitions, especially in the form of aqueous solutions of

on coals from the ldcsoow and Donets Basins,_especially
calcium bicarbonate. The properties of brown Crials,
and their tendency to oxidation, can be assessed fircm
results obtained during experiments on coal samples
with a va ing degree of crushing during 600 hours at
40? 600 Wand 1000C under laboratory conditions (Figs.
1. 2 and 3). These results show that brown coal from
t~e Moscow Basin and the Gusinoyd OzerO Region have a
tendency to be oxidised by the oxygen contained in the
air, and are not very~table during storing - they cannot
be stored for more -than b-to months. The preparation
of aqueous solutions of calcium bicarbonate is described.
The temperature in stocks of coals from these sources,
when no inhibitors were added, rose above the critical
point after six weeks to two months; when calcium bi-
carbonate inhibitors were added the temperature inside
the stock-pile remained low. The coal could be stored for
a number-of years and the propertie~g remained unchanged.

ties of brown coal from the Gusinoy-,m Owro Region during
long storing. The action of various inhibitors (!,,alcium
bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, ammonium sulphare and
sodium sulphate) was also tested on coal from the Llozl
Basin (Table 2). When ammonium chloride was used as ii-,-
hibitor poorer results were obtained. There are 2 Tables,
