ABSTRACT: In estimating the potential radiation hazard of a lunar flight, he
'following factors were considered: 1) the space radiation environment
on the lunar trajectory, 2) the combined effect of Ionizing radiation and
other spaceflight factors on t'he cosmonaut, 3) the possibility of physical
shielding, and 4) the effectiveness of various recommended prophylactic
substance *a. Radiobiological tests showed that the HBE of protons, which,
constitute the chief radiation hazard,, is close to one. Thus *it was possi-,1
ble to use experimental and clinical o6ervations of gamma- and x-ray

irradiation to ev@alua'te the space radiation hazard on brief flights. Exper-
imental studies on large laboratory animals were used to establish a basis
for permissible doses during lunar flight. This method permitted evalua-
tion of the character and degree of radiation injuriep from gamma and protori
irradiation in the dose'kange to be encountered durin lunar flight. In
'9
addition, clinical observations of people subjected to local. irradiation for
cancer treatment werg analyzed, A classification of regulated doses for
brief spacefLights was made on the bas is of this materi al. (W.-A's, No. 22; ATD

Abstract A control group of horses (2 horses) received during 60
days a ration which consisted of: five kilograms of hay,
4.75 kilograms of oats, 0.5 kilograms of fodder-briquets,
3 kilograms of straw, and 30 grams of salt. In the se-
cond group (2 horses) during a week the oats were replaced
by crushed corn kernels. In the third group (4 horses)
oats were replaced by corn kernels. The corn feed did not

clinical syndrome of diminished resistance to infection
observed in t-.heso persons, However, lowered hemi. -iso-

slight increase of the beta2 globulins were observed. Of

Illus, 7
A discussion of the pathological picture and modern views on aetiology.
The ear3y diagnostic value of radiolo.-ical examination is emphasized.
The cases deserited favour the vachanical theory of chromic vesicular
pneumocolon. In one the condition po.9sibly arose in consequence of gastric
ulcer perforation (presence of an ulcer scar). In the a-athors' opinion
many additional factors such as chromic diseases of the respiratory tractp
circ-u1atQT-.F failitrej, chronic undernourishment may influence the appearance
of this d1sease, Bojanowicz - Loaz

from 8 days to 13 months. The lesions occur in the upper parts of the alimentary
tract and in the lungs, The death of one child at the age of 11 months was due to
mycotic septicaemia with peritonitis and embolism in the skin. Thirteen children
suffering from septico-toxaemia had received different antibiotics during a period
from 6 to 30 days. Broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment may lead to an increaced

In 28 fatal cases of burning the cortex of the gyrus centralis posterior, the basal
ganglia (thalamus opticus), the pone Varoll and the medulla oblongata were exa-
mined h1htologically, using various staining techniques. Besides non-specific
changes In the'vascular system (congestion, erythrodiapedesis, small ha(!morrha-.
ges, haernolysts, proliferation of endothellum and adventitial cells) In 2/'V@' of ca-
ses coagulative thrombi and In 1/3 fibrinous balls were present in the vessels.
Lesions and destruction of almost all nerve cells were recorded. Oedema of con-
siderable extent was present, sometimes with small foci of colliquative necrosis.
Counting of the damaged nerve cells showed that the degree and the extent of the
burns as well as the survival period had no Influence upon the cervbral tis-sue
changes. It is concluded that there are no characteristic morphological chinges of

In the lymphatic node. numerous tubercles exhibiting no tendency to brealting down

Abstract : A brief review of the literature is given on the 0.6ruption
of biocoenotic relations resulting from wide use of insecticides,
chiefly their destrictive effect on beneficial fauna. The
following problems are posed: 1) the question of agricultural
and forest biocoenosea resistance to dangerous pest increases;
2) the revision of contemporary methods in applying chemicals
in agricultural and forest industries; 3) the tendency to 2.imitu
the use of synthetic insecticides to a minimum necessary for
plant protection; 4) the study of the effect of intiecticides on:
a) plant development and accumulation in fruits; b) on useful
animals; c) the quality of meat in farm animals; d) on human

poisonous accumulations in soils, fruits and seeds, in
PniTml and huninn organisms; 6) the biochemical study of
insecticide preservation of the biotope: d) the process and
tempo of their decomposition in biocoonosis; b) phyoico-
