ABSTRACTs Results are given of an invetatigatton of the sensitivity
and the dark current of the FEU-39 and FEU-46A nitrogea-cooled photo-
multipliers having antimony-cesium photocathodca without a conducting
substrate. Light f an(4SVD-120A lamaPpassed through the quartz
light guide and thej;MMR-P;_onochr@'m@t_o PL11uminating the photocathodes.
A photacurrent two r three time 11 greater than the dark current at
room temperatura corresponds.to the "weak" light flux with 5 x 103
photons/nec. The pbotocurrent due to a "strong" light flux was not
less than 5 x 10-0 amg which, according to the calculation, corresponds
to a flux with 5 x 10 photons/sec, The signal from the "weak" light
flux and the photomultiplier noise were measurod by counting the
pulses developing across the photamultipILer loads SLgnals from the

Abstract : A spontaneous d1sease of chicks, which was not caused by
a viral infection and which vas manifested by a disturbance
of hemopoiesis and fatty degeueration of the liver, or by
paresis and piualysis of fee-, was observed. The patholoL-ical
course of the disease was ex.?erimentally reporduced, and ';he

composed of natural.feeds was explained. 'The disturb.=3 of
hemopoiesis and the process of fatty degeneration of the liver
were more marked in the absence of both folic and ascortic
acids from tho vitamin complex than when only one of th(!m was
wanting. The diaturbance of the process of the product:Ion
of blood was characterized by the appearance An the liver of
cellular infiltrates consisting of hemocytobalsts in different
stages of deve1qment, Such infiltrates were also dit3covered
in other organs (kidneys, heart). Paralysis and paresic of
the feet developod in cases where riboflavin ims lacking
from the vitanim3 supplied. Among chickens which were re-
eciving basic rations without their supplement4tion by some
water-soluble vitamins, only sporadic cases of disease with
no marked symptoias, were observed. From the data obtc, ined,
it may be concluded that the addition of an incomple,;e com-
plex of biologically active substances to the basic dIat leads
to the disturban,@e of the chemical equilibritun of the metabo-
lio processes. The results ofthe expetiments indicate

It is shown that oxySen dissolves in the form of
A920 observing Sivert's rule, and that the amount
of gas dissolving in the metal is proportional to
the square root of the pressure of that gan. The
dependence curve of A920 solubility on the temper-
ature under the pressure of IeO526 atm is 0computed.
The curve passes through a minimum at 400 . The

ABSTRACT: The development of higher education in Poland after WW
II has also affected the Mining and Metallurgical Academy
in Cracow. In 1939 the Chair of Non- Ferrous Metals Me-
tallurgy consisted of only ode'scientific worker and the
department head Professor Dr.A. Krupkowski. Since 1945
however, the number of scientific workers has been rising
continuously. At present there is the department head,
Professor Dr. A. Krupkowskiq 4 extra-ordinary professors:
Master of Engineering W. DoiaaAski, Dr. E. Iwanciw, Dr.
W. Ptak, Dr.W. Truszkowski; one Docent, Master of Engi-
neering J. Wantuchowski; four assistant-leeturors: Doctor

Drwal, Master of Engineering Z.Szczygiel; two senior
assistants Master of Engineering A, Dedo and Master
of Engineering St. Koperski., The Chair of Non-ferrous
Metals Metallurgy was formed within AGH before 1930.
It was headed by Professor SowiAski, and after his
death taken over temporarily by Doctor of Engineering
W. loskiewicz whog aided by his coworkersq investigated
precious metal brass and light metal alloys. After WW
II he investigated the processing of light metal ores
on a laboratory scale and reduction of magnesite by
means of ferro-silicon. From December 1930 U3119399
and after WW II since 1945, the Chair was headed by
Professor Dim A. Krupkowski,, Member of the Polish
Academy of Science. Before VAV II Dr. Krupkowski him-
self and with his co-workera, published several,funda-

193.51 together with Engineer J, TakliAski he published
an important paper on the reaction ZnO + 0 at elevated
temperatures; in 1936 on reduction of metallic oxides
by means of coal and cokel in 1937, together with Engi-
neer M. Balicki, on new theory of recrystallization of
compressed metals and with S. Balicki several papers on
kinetics of liquid metals oxidation. After WW II, along
with the existing section of Non-ferrous metals metallurgy,
two new sections were formed 1) Non-ferrous Metals Ore
Concentration Section and 2) Non-ferrous Metals Pressure
Forming Section. Analysis of Ores was reorganized in
1957 into an independent Chair of Ores and Metals Chemis-
try. Since 1945, due to more scientific workers and appara-
tuses being available, there was a marked increase of

At that time Professor Krupkowski published a monograph
"Principles of Modern Metallurgy"s followed by several
papers published in collaboration with Professor Dr. W,
Ptak and Professor Dr. A, Block-Bolten, on "Obtaining
and Refining of Metals"q and a monograph "Principles of
Thermodynamics and its Application in metallurgy and Me-
tal Science". Dr. Ptak is investigating problems of metals
activity coefficient trends in liquid- and solid solid
solutions of two or three components and definition of
metal solution irregularities. Dr. A. Block-Bolton investi-
gates problems of solutions composed of a metal and sil-

elucidate the structure of' metallurgical slags. Dr.
DomaAski published papers on "Metals Affinity towards
Chlorine" and "Solubility of Gases in Metals"; to-
gether with Professor Krupkowski he published a manu-
al "Zinc and Cadmium Metallurgy". Dr. Krupkowski ahd
Master of Engineering H. Fik Worked out a theory of
zine refining,, thanks to which production of 90,,.999 %
pure zinc could be produced on an industrial scale and
99958 % pure cadmium. Both authors obtained two patents.
Professor Dr. W. Truszkoivski published several papers
on "Range of Plastic Defozmation of Metals" and together
witli Dr. Krupkowski they produced a simple method of de-
termining an anizotropic coefficient, based on stretching

worked out a nomogram which could be used for calcula-
tion of stretched metal samples elongation. This nomo-
gram is now included into Polish stretching standards.
An entirely different sphere of activities is the pro-
duction of so called economy alloys, known as Silicon-
bronzes, worked out by Dr. Krupkowski and Professor Cz.
Adamski. These alloys could replace more expensive tin-
bronzes. For this work which, in the long ran, will
save millions of zloty, both scientists received a state
prize and obtained a patent. The same scientists worked
out another kind of alloy, a brass with lower than normal
copper content. For this work again they received a

urgy maintains a lively contact with several metallurgical
plants for whom they solve many vital practical problems.
One of them was teaching personnel of Metallurgical Plant

This specific job was carried out by a team led by Vice-
minister blaster of Engineering F. Kaim. Professor Krupkows-

the author outlines the program for future investigations
which shoul&be carried out by the Chair of Non-Ferrous
