TITLE: Laboratory fractionating column for thorough purification of gases
~SOURCE: Zavodskaya laboratoriya; v. 30, no. 9. 19641 1152-1153
.TOPIC TAGS: fractionating columnj gas purification, spiral fitting
ABSTRACT: The laboratory fractionating apparatus consisted of a low-temperature
Xractionator of glass, fluoroplastic-4, and stainless steel. It allowed thorough i
purification of liquefied gases within a temperature range of zero to -165C. As i
shown in Fig. 1 on the Enclosure) the fractionating part of the column (1), which
is 120 cm long and 0.9 cm. in diameter, is fitted with triangular 2 x 2 mm spirals
of 0.18-mm stainless steel. These are set at intervals of 1 to 3 cm, depending on
the nature of the fractionated gas. The supporting grates (2) are also of stainless
steel. Tba column is equipped with two calibrated 1-ml capacity containers) the
upper one (3) for the distilling of high-boiling admixtures$ and the lower (4) for
separa-ting low-boiling admixtures. The flow of liquid from (3) is regulated by a
valve (5) with a noodle point.stopper (6) of stainless steel. The fractionating
column and the containers are".onclosed in a silver-coated vacuum jackets The

system is provided with stopcocks (7) for loading and taking of samples. The
condenser (8) is a tube 20 cm long and 20 mm in diameter and is fitted into a
cavity in a solid cryostat (9) of copper, one end of which is immersed in a Dewar
flask with liquid nitrogen. A heating coil (10) provides the proper pressure in ihe
column by means of a contact manometer (11) and a relay (12). The pressure-re u-
lating mechardsm also contains a sliding contact (13) and an electromagnet (1430
which reduce the pressure fluctuations within the fractionator to a value below 1 mm

TITLE1 Preparation of high-purity monogermana
SOURACE: Zhurnal neorganioheskoy khimiip v. 11) no. 4, 19661, n4-7iq
TOPIC TAGS: germanium compound, high purity metal, rectification
ABSTRACT: A method for preparing high-purity monogermane containing less than I x
10"4% impurities is described. The sowca of~fhe imurities are thought to be the
chloro derivatives of carbon present i GeC1 -
4. Monogermane was obtained by reducing
commercial GeC14 with an aqueous NaBB4 i-old-t-ion, and the impurities present were dater
mined by mass spectrometry. The i=urities (methane, ethane, ethylene) arsine) were
removed from monogarmane by rectification and their relative volatilities were deter-,
.mined for various concentrations in the systems C254-G914, AsH3-GeF4, and C2F,6-G9H4-
All the solutions obeyed Henry's law at low, concentrations., but did not obey Raoult s.
law, with the exception of the solutioL of othylene in monogermane. 7he relative vol-!
atillitios were found to be sufficiently high to allow the use of rectification for a
thorough removal of these imDurities from monogermane, Orig. art. has3 6 figures
