Delayed-neutron yields in ... B102/3138
the number of delayed neutrons emittedi about 0.2 see;
after irradiation
had ceased the sample was dipped into a neutron detector
1.5 m from the
neutron source. The detector consisted of 17 boron counters
of the
NM-5h (3NM-5A) type contained in a paraffin block. The end
of neutron
,bombardment which coincided with removal of the sample
vias established
.AnembLtographically with an accuracy of 0.02 see. As
neutron counting
started 0.2 see after the end of bombardment, this caused a
loss in
neutrons with a delay of 0.16 sec. Special measurements
were made to
determine this error, which was not above the experimental
level. The
total number of delayed neutrons could thus be determined
by extra-
polating the neutron number - versus - time curve to the
instant when
bombardment ceased. The following results were found; totf"
delayed-
neutron yield decay event; 0.0130 * 0.0015 for Pu239, 4jid
0-075
-t 0.007 for Th The Pu239, yield is twice as high as when
fission is
induced by thermal or fission neutrons. This result is
explained by
assuming that neutron emission probability increases with
increasing ex-
citation energy. There are 1 figure and 4 references: 3
Soviet and
1 non-Soviet. The two references to English-language

TEXT: The relation between 6~ and 6~ for 3 grades of steel
with a diff6r-
ent Ni content'(35XM, 34XBM and 33XH8MA),after,heat treatment
was investigated.
The..heat-treatment-consisted of oil hardening at-830 - 8500 C
andAempering at
560 - 605~C with -oil cooling. Mechanical properties (6s, ej,
6.1,66, 83.. IV and

tests were c~;ried
out,by three different methodst on plane samples -
tension-compression,(I),
on.p,lane cantilever samples- bending with torsion (II), on
cantilever samples
with a notch - bending with torsion (III). It is established
that after the
said heat treatment (q - 105 - 110 kg/mm2) 6w of
investigated-steels Israther

all 3 steels the relation of respective 6w and (51 is about-the
same namely:

steels to 3.22 - 3.50. Consequently the addition ofwNi to steel
for all parts
working under cyclic load conditions is not justified. The
application of steels
with Ni is advisable for large cross-section parts where Ni is
introduced to
raise the hardenability.

After a discussion of the theoretical and clinical
indications for epinephrectomy in
cases of thromboangfitis obliteranis, the author comments on
the short-term results
obtained in a material of -16 patients operated on in the
course of the last 2 years.
Epinephrectomy was performed together with lumbar
sympathectorny. Three caws
are described. In one, with gangrenous changes in the limbs,
the procedure had no
effect on the morbid process. In the 2nd, with
far-advancedchanges, an immediate
cure was obtained. In the 3rd, changes appeared in the
second limb after a lapse of 18
months. On the whole, better results were obtained than in
patients who were
subjected to sympathectomy alone. The author, discussing the
operative technique,
recommends examination of the adrenals in every case in
which sympathectoiny is
to be perform ed. (IX,

Existing views are discus-sed, with reference to the
literature and the technique of
investigations on (logs is described. An increased blood
pressure in the right posterior
extremity was induced bN, the o1wrative inethod: the
left iliac arterv was sectioned
and then terminal-lateral anastomosis with the right
external ifiac artery was
rformed. In this way the blood pressure in the right
femoral artery increased by
r
0-30 mm. H9, while in the left artery (ligature) it
decreased by 20-30 nim. I-Ig and
in the arteries of the forelimbs it remained unchanged.
Eight dogs were fed for 3-8
months with cholesterol and methylthiouracil.
Arteriosclerotic lesions were found
in 5 dogs. The intensity of lesions in the right iliac
artery, femoral artery and aorta
was similar. The arteriosclerotic lesions and their
development are described. The
arteriograrn and a microphotograph are included. (11, t8)

is titrated with MgBOysolution until the color

In the course of an influenza A-2 epidemic 3-4 months
after the vacci-

Abstracts (English article, authors' English summary
modified) The effect
Tf an-aqueous solution of commercial tannic acid on
different viruscs has
been examined. Ilerpesvirus hominis, Hcrpesvirus uis and
typj. 3 of para-
influenza virus were fom-d to be sensitive while
poliovirus types Z and ),.
and adenovirus Wes 3, 4 and 6 were found to be resistant
to tannic acid.
Tannic acid appeared to have a virucidal action. When
tannic acid waa
added to cells infected with Herpesvirus hominis., viral
multiplication
uaz enhanced rather than inhibited. A decreased
sensitivity to herpesviruses
-vias exhibited by cells treated with tannic acid prior
to infection. The
antiviral effect of-tannic acid is thought to be related
to the poly-

Budapest, Acta Yierobiolotrica Academiae Scientiarum

No 2, 10,60, pages 113-118.
Abstract: [English article, authors' English summary
modified] The effect
of quercetin on different viruses has been studied.
Herpesviros hominis,
Ferpesvirus suis, type 3 of the parainfluenza virus and
the Sindbis virus
were found to be sensitive to quercetin. The
sensitivity of type I poliovirus
was moderate while types 2 and 3 of the poliovirus and
types 3 and 4 of the
adenoviruses were completely resistant. Being active
only against the extra-
cellular virus, quercetin was considered to have a
virucidal effect. The
effect of morin on Herpes suis was identical with that
of quercatin while
rutin was almost completely ineffective. 3 Hungarian,

ABSTRACT: A study is made of the dynamics of an automatic control
system with a variable structure. The system is described by a
differential equation in the form
14-b(t)0 - a(t)ji + F(t) u(0.;)Kw,
where ~ is the relative deviation of a controlled coordinate. U is
the relative deviation of the controller, F(t) is a disturbing
force,
and K is a pcsitive constant (gain factor) which is applicable to
