Cyprus: The Turkish intervention threat
has apparently passed for the moment, but the
long-run danger is still with us.
Turkish military forces are still in high
gear and Turkish Cypriots could still launch
an attack designed to force the military to
come to their assistance.
2. South Korea: Kim Chong-pil's resigna-
tion from the chairmanship of Pak's Democratic
Republican Party has at least temporarily
calmed the students. They have dispersed in
the various provinces and the army is still
keeping the lid on in Seoul.
Kim has said he will serve only as a
plain party member. He will probably keep his
hand in party affairs behind the scenes, how-
ever, trying to maintain a party faction loyal
to him.
Pak requested the resignation only after
heavy pressure from the minister of national
defense, the chairman of the joint chiefs of
staff, and the army chief of staff. The mili-
tary are now back on the political stage more
prominently than at any time since Pak re-
established civilian government last December.

Pak has now agreed to meet with opposi-
tion party leaders in a search for other means
to ease the crisis. Drastic reforms are called
for. r
Laos: Moscow has announced acceptance
of the Polish plan for a six-nation conference
and has proposed an early meeting in Switzer-
land. Reuters reported on the afternoon of
5 June that "informed sources" in London
claimed Britain was "sympathetically" consider-
ing the Polish plan and studying the Soviet
proposal.
Despite the rains, trucks are still mov-
ing from North Vietnam to the Plaine des Jarres.

4. South Vietnam: Khanh's release of the
former junta leaders has caused a flurry of
speculation and a good deal of cenfusion.
the move has weakened
the regime, and the US Embassy fears the gen-
erals may now be better able to work against
Khanh.
The government communiqu?n the release
failed to indicate whether or not the generals
had been found guilty of conniving with the
French, as charged by Khanh when he took over.
Some Vietnamese consider the omission to mean
that the regime is itself now inclined toward
a neutralist solution.
There has been no large-scale Viet Cong
attack for more than two weeks. In both 1962
and 1963, a similar letdown took place during
May and June.

troop strength may have been halted. This was
not expected until later. Desertion rates are
still high, however, and must be brought down
before overall strength can rise.
5. Congo: Members of the Congo's ruling
clique are working on the ouster of Adoula.
Defense Minister Anany, who is willing, appears
to be the most likely replacement.

6. Cuba-USSR: Preparations for the Cuban
take-over of the SAM system are further along.
Cubans now control the radar system in
at least one of the three air defense sectors.

Most of the remaining Soviet naval per-
sonnel may be slated for early departure.
Four ships have taken out about 1,000
Soviet military and four more--with a total
normal capacity of 2,000--are now in or en
route to Cuban waters.
7. Cuba-Sweden: The Swedish Government says
it will not interfere with SKF's deal to sell
the Cubans $900,000 worth of ball bearings.
Stockholm's argument is that it does not con-
sider bearings strategic and that its trade
with Cuba is in any case handled on a strictly
nonpolitical basis.
8. USSR-Space: The Soviets are testing two
new space vehicle systems. An unsuccessful
launch attempt on 4 June--and a similar failure
last-November-

9. Southeast Asia: Sukarno, summit or no,
is off for a two-day visit to Manila starting
Friday, followed by a five-day stay in Tokyo
as Ikeda's guest. His onward plans are indefi-
nite as the more Indonesia explains its most
recent statements on Malaysia the less likely
a summit becomes.
10. Yugoslovia-USSR: The Yugoslays, who want
more aircraft and air defense equipment, are
about to make a new arms deal with the USSR,

Italy-China: Vittorelli, the Nenni social-
ists' top foreign affairs expert now in China
for an "exploratory" visit, was received by
Mao Tse-tung on Tuesday. We do not know just
what is up, but Vittorelli was accompanied to
Peiping by the Italian Trade Commissioner in
Hong Kong, which gives an official flavor to
the visit.
