These have been tentatively identified as AA-2s. The AA-2 is an infrared homing missile that is standard equipment in the Soviet air force. c. This missile, estimated to have an effective range of about six nautical miles, would, under certain ConditiOns, give the MlOs in Cuba the capability, of knocking down ourlligh- altitude reconnaissance aircraft, e. Friday's photography, turned up more evidence that the Cubans possess short-range ground-to-ground "Frog" missiles similar to the Honest John. Yemen The Chinese Communists have involved Indonesian Communist leader Aidit in their Cuban propaganda circus, presumably to show that others feel the same as they do. Radio Peiping put Aidit on record yesterday as saying the withdrawal of Soviet missiles from Cuba was a "regrettable sacrifice" and that "sovereign Cuba was forced to do things against its will." a. Moscow's envoy arrived in Taiz on Wednesday amidst signs that the Soviets intend to play a stronger hand in support of the republican regime. Several hundred Russian "experts" are on the scene, and more are arriving. Many of these are military types whose job is to teach the Yemenis how to use Soviet military gear. c. The republican regime took over a substantial stockpile of Soviet military hardware (including planes, -tanks and artillery) which Moscow had previously sold to the old Imam. d. More equipment will probably be put into the pipeline before long. e. Cairo's connection with Sana was put on a more official footing yesterday with the signature of �a mutual defense pact. f. On Friday, Nasir told Ambassador Badeau that the UAR was committed all the way to keeping the republican government in the saddle. He did not rule out the possibility of disengagement, however, provided Jordan and Saudi Arabia agreed to stop helping the royalists. h. The Jordanian representative at the UN tells us he is resisting pressure from Husayn to press for a Security Council meeting on Yemen. One of his reasons for this is opposi- tion from Imam Badr's people, who do not want to get into an argument in the Council over who represents whom. i. U Thant does not want to deal with the Yemen problem�just yet either. He is passing the buck to the repre- sentatives of the Arab League. a. B. USSR-Indonesia Khrushchev has agreed in principle to Sukarno's request to reduce Indonesia's debt installments. There seems to be a gOOd chance Sukarno will take time out from his Japanese holiday for a quick trip to Moscow to talk the deal over with Khrushchev. C. Dominican Republic Ex-President Balaguer says he is going home next week to run for the presidency in next month's elections. His chances of winning are nil, but his presence will insert the issue of Trujilloism into the campaign, thereby bringing political passons to a high point. D. Thailand-US On Monday, Foreign Minister Thanat gave Ambassador Young what sounded like the first of a new series of funereal lectures on the impotence of SEATO and the need to shore up Thailand's security with a Thai-US mutual security pact. E. Ghana Nkrumah is in for some worse economic headaches than he already has if something is not discovered soon to control a spray-resistant insect that is playing hob with Ghana's cocoa crop. Cocoa earns 60 percent of the country's foreign exchange, but the way things are going exports will be cut in half in two years' time.
