Canada A friendly and thoroughly reliable Canadian official has discreetly informed the US Embassy that serious consideration is being given in the highest circles in Ottawa to Canada's serving as an "honest broker" in ending Communist China's isolation from the world community. These circles are also toying with the notion that the time has come for Canada to assert its leadership of the "middle powers" by procuring a new draft comprehensive disarmament treaty. Something along these lines may emerge in Pearson's address to the UN General Assembly. B. Syria-USSR C. Uruguay-USSR / D. Jordan-France King Husayn is expected to press de Gaulle for French economic as- sistance when he visits Paris next week. 50X1 50X1 50X1 OUA I 50X1 50X1 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A001900070001-9 50X1 it It IC =1-11L__.--] Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A001900070001-9 E. Communist China-Burma The importance which the Chi- nese Communists attach to Ne Win's negotiations with Burmese communists is shown by the high-level send- off given the leader of the Peiping-oriented wing of the Burmese party. This individual was returning ?to Burma, after a decade-long exile in China, to participate in the Ne Win negotia- tions.
