Vietnam 2. North Korea Violence by North Korean agents operating along the Demilitarized Zone has been very much on the increase re- cently. This probably means that their missions have been changed from intelli- gence collection and subversion to har- assment--perhaps to test the effective- ness of South Korean units deployed re- cently along the Zone. We doubt that this activity is intended to embarrass the Seoul govern- ment on the eve of President Johnson's visit. Soviet Union 6. Berlin 7. Thailand So far there have been no good leaks as to what has been going on at the gathering of East European and other Communist leaders in the Soviet Union. I Western representatives in Bonn are upset by some aspects of Mayor Brandt's talk last week--his fourth this year--with Soviet Ambassador Abrasimov in East Berlin. 50X1 The Mayor's willingness to dis- cuss the issue of a Soviet presence in West Berlin--and especially his pro- posal that a Soviet Embassy representa- tive deal directly with a member of the West Berlin Senat on this question--is judged to be way out of line. Brandt will be told that any understanding reached this way with the Soviets will not be recognized. 50X1 50X1 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A004800020001-2 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A004800020001-2 50X1 8. Brazil President Castello Branco recessed the defiant congress today, but the po- litical turmoil is bound to increase further. Castello Branco's action came after the lower house defied presidential orders to unseat a number of congress- men and revoke their political rights. 50X1 Brasilia at last report was quiet. 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A004800020001-2 ' Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A004800020001-2 TOP SECRET TOP SECRET Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A004800020001-2
