DAILY BRIEF
12 AUGUST 1965
1. North Vietnam
A hunt today by armed US aircraft
for North Vietnamese surface-to-air mis-
sile sites outside the Hanoi ring of
fixed sites--such as the one which brought
down one US aircraft and damaged another
yesterday--brought no results.
However, analysis of radar inter-
cepts taped today by an aircraft flying
over the South China Sea shows that a mis-
sile guidance radar was active possibly
some ten miles from yesterday's shoot-
down. (See map.)
It may be a set located earlier by
several successive radar intercepts at
Hoa Binh some 27 miles to the northwest.

2. Kashmir
Pakistan's propaganda continues to
exaggerate the fighting in Kashmir, where
minor clashes are continuing between pro-
Pakistan infiltrators and Indian security.
forces.
On the Indian side, the authorities
are trying to follow two conflicting lines.
They play down the seriousness of their
difficulties for domestic consumption,
but take a much more concerned view when
talking to foreign representatives.

The Pakistanis also probably count
on psychological help from the Chinese
Communists.
3. Dominican Republic The rebels remain intransigent, es-
pecially over the issue of the future
composition of the military high command.
According to a press report this af-
ternoon, the rebels have asked for an ur-
gent meeting of the UN Security Council
to consider "partisanship" by the Inter-
American Peace Force and the Organization
of American States' Committee. This
looks like another attempt to play for
time.
4. Berlin
Tomorrow's fourth anniversary of
the erection of the Berlin Wall should
pass quietly, although some small groups _
could cause trouble. West Berlin police
and Allied forces are taking precautions.

6.. Saudi Arabia
King Constantine's latest effort
to find a premier centers on Ilias Tsiri-
mokos, a self-styled "socialist" who leads
one faction of Papandreou's Center Union.
The rationale for this royal maneuver is
obscure. When Papandreou named Tsirimokos
to the Interior Ministry last January,
rightist opposition was so vehement that
the ministry had to be shorn of its con-
trol of the police before the appointment'
could be put through.

The Saudi defense minister, speaking
on behalf of King Faysal, has now asked
the US to send "destroyers" and an Air
Force fighter "unit" to help deter'Egyp-
flan attack.
At the same time, the Egyptian for-
eign minister says that "absolutely no
progress is being made toward,a meeting
between Nasir, and Faysal. When prodded,
the minister assured our charg?n Cairo
that any,Egyptian military action would
be againstYemeni rebel bases and not
against Saudi Arabia "per se."

7. Israel
The Israeli Government is again fo-
cusing attention on its border problems.
A clash between Israeli and Syrian tanks
and artillery broke out today over an old
problem--who can plow which land in the
demilitarized zone along the border.
The Israelis again took the oppor-
tunity to shell the work site of the
Syrian's Jordan River diversion project.
