SUBJECT: Conversations with Jerome Levinson, Multinational
Corporations Subcommittee Staff, and Pat Holt, Senate
Foreign Relations Committee Staff, re Bill Broe's
Testimony on ITT/Chile
1. During a sanitization session with the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee staff on Bill Broe's testimony of 27 March 1973, Mr. Levinson
made the comment that he thought "they" had handled the CIA aspects of
the hearings well for us. He added that Mr. Houston had commented earlier
that Senator Church and the other Senators had done a good job in staying
within the "ground rules. "
2. I said I thought Senator Church had done well in Broe's session
but personally I thought the revelations during Ambassador Korry's open
testimony were "most unfortunate. " (I was of course referring to Levinson's
questions about $400, 000 in Government funds being used to thwart Allende's
election.)
3. As expected, Levinson took the defensive immediately and said
the information on which his question was based had not come from Senator
Church. He said it came from two different sources: one on "Kissinger's
staff" and another source. I commented that the real issue was the sensitivity
of the information regardless of the source from which it was obtained. His
only defense was that it was the job of the Subcommittee on Multinational
Corporations to determine what U. S. policy was in these cases and this infor-
mation obviously had a bearing on the matter. As somewhat of an afterthought
he conceded that it probably had "gone a little farther than it should have. "
