GRENADA:. Status of Airport Project
Construction of the new Point Salines International Airport is
proceeding rapidly.
Prime Minister Bishop recently
said that preparations for the opening in March 1984 are on schedule
and that'test flights could take place by late January, if not sooner.
Bishop also said Grenada is looking for additional funds to accelerate
the construction.
Comrhent .All Indications point to completion of the airport in
time for the scheduled opening next March. Claims by Grenadian
officials that the airport will be used solely for commercial purposes
are questionable. Grenada currently does not have enough hotel
rooms to accommodate even one or two large; commercial flights per
week, and there Is rio indication new hotels will be built any time soon.
