National Research Council (NRC)13
2101 Constitution Ave., NW Phone: (202)334-2100
Washington, DC 20418 Fax: (202)334-1597
Bruce Alberts, Chairman
Organizational Notes: Founded: 1916. NRC is governed by a 13-
member board made up of members of the National Academy of
Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute
of Medicine. The Governing Board approves each project and
annually reviews the programs and budget ofeach of the Council's
eleven divisions. After project approval, committees are assem-
bled to conduct the work and project results are reviewed by an
independent group to validate the findings. Staff: Approximately
650 professional staff, 9000 scientists, engineers, and other profes-
sionals volunteer for service on NRC committees.
Research Activities and Fields: Council is the working arm of the
National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of
Engineering, carrying out most of the studies done in the Acade-
mies' names. The majority of the Council's work is done in
response to specific questions from federal agencies or Congress.
Occasionally some research is conducted in conjunction with
philanthropic foundations, and NRC does initiate studies which it
considers to be of national importance (these are funded through
unrestricted grants from industry and private foundations and
income from the Academies' endowments). Activities are carried
out in twelve divisions: Commission on Behavioral and Social
Sciences and Education; Commission on Engineering and Techni-
cal Systems; Commission on Geosciences, Environment, and
Resources; Commission on Life Sciences; Commission on Physi-
cal Sciences, Mathematics, and Applications; Office of Interna-
tional Affairs; Office of Scientific and Engineering Personnel;
Board on Agriculture; Mathematical Sciences Education Board;
Board on Science, Technology and Economic Policy; Strategic
Highway Research Program; and Transportation Research
Board. Advice from the NRC may take many forms: early
warnings of potential concerns, proposals to solve problems and
set priorities, guidance in planning and policy formation, evalu-
ation of programs, assessment of risks and benefits, and encour-
agement of the health and progress of the scientific disciplines.
Publications and Services: Most committee projects result in for-
mal reports. All NRC reports, except a limited number on defense
topics that arerclassifed are made public. New studies and
publications are announced monthly in News Report, which is
available upon request from the Office of Public Affairs. Informa-
tion on reports and other publications may be obtained from the
