A~ed For Release 2001/03/26 : CIA-RDP96-00787R000500130037-5 Title: NAVY'S "ATLAS OF THE OCEANS" DESERVES STATE PRIZE NOMINATION Primary source: Zarya Vostoka, August 5, 1980, No. 180 (16756), p. 3, cols. 7-8 Extract: "Atlas of the Oceans" -- this two-volume set, which was com- Title: SOLAR PHYSICS RESEARCH AT - SAYAN MOUNTAIN OBSERVATORY Primary source: Komsomol'skaya Yt~ pravda, August 16, 1980, No. 189 SGlC (16895), p. 4, cols. 2-5 Entire text: The solar observato of the Siberian Institute of Bart Magnetis piled by the USSR Ministry of Defense and the Navy, may boldly be called an epochal cartographic work. It was developed by a collective of numerous authors, involving the collaboration of many scientific and scientific-technical institu- tions and agencies under the direc- tion and with the direct participa- tion of admirals S. Gorshkov, V. Alekseyev and A. Rassokho, Captain 1st Rank V. Fadeyev, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sci- ences A. Monin, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Prof. K. Salishchev, Doctor of Geological-Mineralogical Sciences, Prof. G. Gorshkov, Doctor of Geographic Sciences, Prof. A. Muromtsev, Doctor of Geographic Sciences, Prof. Kh. Pogosyan, and L. Lukanova, M. Seregin and Ye. Chechulina. The systematic mapping of the oceans that culminated in the two- volume "Atlas of the Oceans" has revealed for science a multitude of previously unknown laws governing the spatial relationships that are constantly taking form in the world's oceans in connection with the unique processes that are occurring through the interplay of,,energyo, matter and information in four subsystems -- lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, and also within each of them.' Chapters of the atlas are correspondingly devoted to these subsystems. The publication of the "Atlas of the Oceans" represents an important event in the life of science. Here the method of scientific modeling presents extensive opportunities to a broad circle of scientists to draw - -- - t L V a a av.n - -'--- USSR Academy of Sciences' Siberian. Branch (SO) is located high in the Eastern Sayan Mountains. Scientists have installed highly complex equip- ment and built a small city for the high-altitude solar expedition's work and life among craggy peaks and snowy summits. The sun is observed closely through the lenses of large non-eclipse coronagraphs; the mirrors of hori- zontal solar telescopes turn in obedience to commands. The eleva- tion is 2000 meters: Not many similar observatories are to be found in the country. The Siberian scientists are pursuing work for the study of solar physics here. A par- ticularly large amount of work is now being done in accordance with the in- ternational program "Solar Maximum Year". The study of the sun and processes connected with changes in its activity will help to predict the behavior of our star in advance. And data ob- tained at the observatory are now being used for more than just basic research. (A photograph is given showing two mountain observatories.) Comments and additions or deletions to the distribution list should be ad- dressed to: out more and more knowledge about our planet, and it opens the way for further investigations on new sci- entific levels. It is therefore not a matter of chance that. this unique scientific labor has been nominated for the USSR State Prize in the field of slAppr?ved For Release 2001/03/26 : CIA-RDP96-00787R000500130037-5
