DCI WORLDWIDE BRIEFING - EL SALVADOR
Country Trends
Government Forces:
21,000 armed forces
9,000 security forces
30,000 total
Armed Guerrillas: Estimate 5,000 fulltime, similar
number militia
Government: -- 80-85 percent turnout in March 1982 constituent
assembly elections.
-- Confiscated large estates under Phase I
currently benefit some 30,000 peasant
families.
-- Distributed private plots under Phase III
currently benefit 32,000 peasant familites;
some 35,000 land titles have been awarded
since March 1980.
-- Far right opposition to the reforms in
May/June was successfully countered by
President Magana and the military in
conjunction with protests from the labor
sector and the Christian Democratic Party.
-- Armed Forces are improving their combat
performance against the guerrillas as seen by
the taking of prisoners, increased small
patrol operations, better coordination and
planning of major sweeps, and better use of
air and naval support.
