SOVIET SECURITY UNIT RELOCATES
AYBAK SOVIET BIVOUAC, AFGHANISTAN
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A PROBABLE SOVIET SECURITY UNIT FROM
AQCHEH MY HAVE R LOCATED TO AYBAK IN NORTHERN AFGHANISTAN.
THIS UNIT WILL PROBABLY PROVIDE SECURITY FOR A SOVIET TACTICAL
PIPELINE.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: A PROBABLE SECURITY FORCE CONSISTING OF A
REINFORCED INFANTRY BATTALION IS NEWLY IDENTIFIED IN A BIVOUAC
APPROXIMATELY 20 NM NORTH OF AYBAK. THE BIVOUAC, AT 36-33-30N
067-47-20E, CONSISTS OF A TENT CAMP, A VEHICLE PARK, A
LOGISTICAL/SUPPLY AREA, AND A POL STORAGE AREA. THE CAMP
LAYOUT OF THIS INSTALLATION IS VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL TO ANOTHER
SECURITY BIVOUAC AT AQCHEH, APPROXIMATELY 75 NM TO THE EAST,
WHICH WAS BEING DISMANTLED ON 12 JULY 1982. (SEE NPIC/PEG
BRIEFING BOARD Z-10998/82 07/82)
(S/D) THE REINFORCED MOTORIZED RIFLE BATTALION HAS PROBABLY
BEEN ASSIGNED THE MISSION OF SECURING THE SOVIET TACTICAL POL
PIPELINE THAT RUNS FROM KHAIRABAD TACTICAL POL SITE
TO POL-E KHOMRI TACTICAL POL SITE
(S/D) AYBAK, APPROXIMATELY 30 i'M SOUTH OF THE USSR-AFGHANISTAN
BORDER, IS IN NORTH CENTRAL AFGHANISTAN.
