SOUTH AFRICAN MILITARY ACTIVITY
CHANGONGO MILITARY AREA, ANGOLA
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: SOUTH AFRICAN GROUND FORCES REMAIN IN
ANGOLA.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: A REINFORCED SOUTH AFRICAN MECHANIZED INFANTRY
BATTALION IS IN THE CHANGONGO MILITARY AREA. EQUIPMENT PRESENT
INCLUDES AT LEAST 63 RATEL ARMORED FIGHTING VEHICLES (AFV) (NOT
ALL ON GRAPHIC) AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VEHICLES. THE RATEL AFV
ARE NO LONGER DEPLOYED IN A DEFENSIVE POSTURE, BUT ARE PARKED
IN SMALL GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE AREA. IN THE PAST, THIS
REGROUPING HAS OFTEN PRECEDED A UNIT MOVE. THERE ARE STILL NO
INDICATIONS THAT SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES HAVE CROSSED OR INTEND TO
CROSS THE CUNENE RIVER.
