(S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: ACTIVITY INVOLVING TWO AERODYNAMIC VEHICLE (ADV) SYSTEMS CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT WAS OBSERVED. 2. (S/D) REMARKS: ADV-4 CONFIGURATION CONFIRMED. (S/D) AN ADV-4 WAS ON A DOLLY ON THE LOOP ROAD NORTH OF LAUNCH PAD D-3. THE ADV-4 IS A SMALL GROUND-LAUNCHED AERODYNAMIC VEHICLE WHICH HAS BEEN UNDERGOING TESTING AT KAPUSTIN YAR SINCE 1978. THE FUSELAGE OF THE ADV-4 IS 3.0 METERS LONG 25X1 EDGE OF THE MID-MOUNTED MAIN 25X1 THE WING HAS A SLIGHTLY 25X1 25X1 METERS, 25X1 THE HORIZ ONTAL STABILIZER ALSO APPEARED TO HAVE A 25X1 TAPERED LEADING E DGE AND A SPAN THE 25X1 .CONFIGURATION OF THE VERTICAL STABILIZER AND ENGINE WAS NOT DISCERNIBLE. AN ADV-4 TRANSPORTER-ERECTOR-LAUNCHER (TEL) WAS ALSO ON THE LOOP ROAD, APPROXIMATELY 20 METERS WEST OF THE ADV-4. A SECOND ADV-4 TEL WAS IN THE OPERATIONS AREA OF SITE 1. (S/D) THE ROLE OF THE ADV-4 IS STILL. UNKNOWN. THE SIZE OF THE ADV-4 AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH A TRACKED TEL MAY INDICATE THAT THIS VEHICLE WILL BE USED AS A HIGHLY MOBILE, SHORT-RANGE BATTLEFIELD RECONNAISSANCE DRONE. (S/D) TWO ADV-2, FOUR ADV-2 LAUNCHERS, AN ADV-2 TRANSPORTER, AND A PROBABLE ADV-2 SOLID ROCKET MOTOR BOOSTER WERE OBSERVED AT SITE 3. THE TWO ORIGINAL LAUNCHERS WERE IN FIRING POSITION ON PAD D-3. THE OTHER TWO LAUNCHERS, WHICH WERE PARKED IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF PAD D-3, WERE OF THE NEW 11.4-METER CONFIGURATION. ONE WAS OCCUPIED BY A FULLY ASSEMBLED ADV-2C.. THE OTHER WAS ATTACHED TO A KRAZ 214 PRIME MOVER, CONFIRMING THAT THESE- LAUNCHERS ARE TOWED AND NOT These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed ana- lytical work. THE FIRST OF THESE NEW LAUNCHERS HAS BEEN PRESENT ; THE SECOND WAS FIRST OBSERVED ON 25X1 A PARTIALLY ASSEMBLED ADV-2 AIRFRAME WAS ALSO 25X1 ON PAD D-3 AND A PROBABLE ADV-2 SOLID ROCKET MOTOR BOOSTER WAS ADJACENT TO A TRUCK-MOUNTED CRANE, THE PROBABLE BOOST 7 A 25X1 SOLID ROCKET MOTOR BOOSTER IS PROBABLY USED TO ASSIST IN LAUNCHING THE TURBOJET/TURBOFAN-POWERED ADV-2, A FEATURE PREVIOUSLY OBSERVED ON THE SOVIET DR-1 GROUND-LAUNCHED TARGET DRONE. (S/D) THE ADV-2 IS A GROUND-LAUNCHED CRUISE VEHICLE ON WHICH TESTING BEGAN AT KAPUSTIN YAR IN 1975, SINCE THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE FIRST LAUNCHER, THE LEVEL OF 25X1 ADV-2 ASSOCIATED ACTIVITY H D, PROBABLY INDICATING THAT A NEW TEST PHASE OF THE ADV-2 IS UNDERWAY.
